Southern Indiana last June on my trip to South Carolina

Ah yes, my wife and I have been there too. We spent a day cruising that part of Indiana checking out at least 6 covered bridges including that one. Fair warning to those of you who want to check out the many covered bridges in Southern Indiana, do it before or after the Covered Bridge Festival because if you do it during the festival it will be absolute mayhem.

The Penobscot Narrows Bridge is a 2,120 feet long cable-stayed bridge that carries US 1/SR 3 over the Penobscot River. It connects Verona Island to Prospect, in the U.S. state of Maine. It replaced the Waldo–Hancock Bridge, built in 1931. Wikipedia

I think it goes back to when the world was equestria powered, but that is just a guess.

In snowy climates or icy conditions the bridge will remain safe to cross in the event of bad weather.  The roof over the bridge also makes the bridges boards that are seeing the load last longer...require less service.  The roof of the covered bridge often would use a cedar shake which is very long life with low maintenance.

Cheaper to replace the roof and walls than the heavy structural lumber used in the bridge. The roof protects the structure from all weather...

Over 219 wooden covered bridges remain in Pennsylvania, while Ohio has 142 remaining.  Ohio originally had over 4000 according to  Wikipedia.  By contrast Tennessee had only four remaining as of 1980.  One of Tennessee’s covered bridges is near me, I will have to get a photo of it before I move...

Rail bridge in Leeds Alabama...wandered around this little town and chanced past the old railway station...historic monument claimed that this rail line was the origin of the John Henry story.
If it works good, it looks good...

This is a bridge on the coastal walkway where I live in NZ. Can't ride my CB750 on to it as it's not legal but I did service my bike on the day the picture was taken so I think that is close enough !

I sort of wonder if covered bridges were better for horses... just another barn to them.
But maybe they would get nervous being up in the air over water, some of them uncovered ones.

Like RAF122S said, they were covered to help preserve the actual surface of the bridge from the elements being they're entirely made of wood. I don't know how many there are in southern Indiana but I know there is a bunch. Most are closed to traffic and are only there for historical purposes and pedestrian use but there are more than a few that are still open for traffic. They're typically one lane so you better make sure nobody is coming the other way before you commit yourself to entering one, also the driving surface is basically 2 thick wood planks running the span of the bridge and spaced to the width of the track of a cars tires so what that means is if you're on a bike, you're going to have to pick which plank you want to cross on and stay on it. No you wont fall through if you miss one of the two planks but it will be a bumpy ride on a bike if you do. Staying on a plank the length of the bridge can be a challenge when riding 2up on a Goldwing and having lousy low speed maneuvering/balance skills like me.  :o
