What's up with Megacycle Cam Prices??
« on: September 25, 2019, 09:20:46 pm »
As the title says... Looks like they have jumped up to over $500 WITH you still sending in your own cam for them to work on. They used to be at least a little competitive, right? I was looking at the 125-NR, but now may be looking for a competitor for a COUPLE HUNDRED less. Can anyone convince me its worth it? I hear only amazing things about the product, but dang...

Hard welded cost some extra.
I did not notice any wear on my old Action Fours SS-1 cam after 40.000 km. Not hard welded.
You have other cams for CB750

125-NR  .350    252   106     NORRIS R profile.  MILD performance       20/52    .005
            .350    252   106     increase.  Road/Road race.  SOME TQ        52/20    .005
                                          ENGINE BUILDERS PREFER this profile
for small tracks in basically stock
                                          motors.  P.M. Springs STRONGLY RECOMMENDED

I bought hard welded rocker arms by Web Cam from CycleX for an OK price. Now used with an old and used RC295 profile that looked like new when I got it. Not welded either.
Check Dynoman that has hard welded cams as alternative.

I like my web-cam, in my 836. After riding it a year, I advanced it a tad to lower the power.
Pulls hard from 4k now.

I think Megacycle hard welded cams are the best out there. I also know they are expensive. I have had conversations with both Jim and Barbara on that subject. Part of the problem is their location. Labor is more expensive and the metal treatment prices have gone up substantially secondary to environmental regs. Prices would be less if they acquired blank iron billets but that isn't going to happen secondary to the minimum purchase number.
I like the Megacycle grinds over the Web (which are limited). The Web 41's are OK but you can run into problems with the 63b & c grinds as you need to increase the valve to valve clearance secondary to the long duration. Take a look at the CycleX CX-7 grind if your are building something for high performance. CycleX also has Web grinds for drop in applications.

Maybe I just needed to hear this. Will I notice a $200 difference in 20 years? Probably not. It’s understandably difficult to spend over $1,000 on just a cam and rockers... :-\

There are cheaper places to get a set of rockers hard welded than megacycle. I used this place, and they charged about $25 per rocker:

As Matt pointed out there are alternatives for rocker arms....that can save you a lot of money. It's the cam grinds i'm after. For example....had them grind a 550 cm for LSR with 110 lobe centers.

It would be fine if it was possible to order any known cam profile ever made for the CB750.
