1973 Z1
« on: October 17, 2019, 03:21:52 PM »
A neighbor of mine here on Maui has a brother here with what looks like a 1973 Z1 (root beer color) sitting, ignored, because he bought two Harleys. The story is it’s been in their family since about 1975 or so. I’m going to look it over, I’ve seen it run so it’s not too bad. It has stock exhaust!  I think they may want to see it go to a good home.
Hmmmmmm. I need this like a need another new heart valve.
We’ll see what happens, I’ll post photos if it gets serious.

I picked up my first Z1 2 months ago. Love it. Does everything a 750 can but with more power! What's he asking if you don't mind?

Two words...GET IT!

FYI - they only made approx 82,000 of that model over three model years ['73-75] they are highly sought after and very collectible.

They were King of the road when they came out in '72.

I love my Hondas but I REALLY love my '75 Z1...

It should have a black engine for that year. As Steve said don't fool around and try to nail it down. 73's go for the biggest money and once you ride it you will fall in love all over again  ;) I know of a guy who is buying as many of the 73-75 Z's as he can get and they are all going to Japan. Lots of machines disappearing.

Good power from the Z1-900 with pistons and cams.
I had a biker friend with a 1000  -77 equipped with RC pistons and RC cams. Not very high lifting cams in need of improved shim holders, stock sleeves bored too. Dellorto pumper carbs with transparant bowls.

Really good power from low all the way to the point he did not dare to twist the throttle further.
230 kmh on that bike was not that stable. I sat behind once and felt the power up to 210...

Just to get it right, the 73 is supposed to have a black engine with the edges of the fins exposed, does that sound right? All the pictures I have found seem to support that.

Check serial number , I had a 24xxx lower end and it was a 74 model, and not black.

Frank, did you like the Z1 more or are they comparable,  the 750 and Z1?

It was a parts bottom end. I had a 75 900 chopper back around 1981, it was pretty quick. . A bit like an 836.
I like the stock rear fender, more than what Honda had back then.

One weak spot of the Kaw 900's was the frame as some are/were prone to crack. Wheelies can be a bad thing sometimes. Check it over carefully especially up towards the steering neck area. Probably some talk about that issue on the internet.

awesome, only one running that i have seen on Oahu. TLC motorcycle salvage closed after Randy Wong passed away, so spare parts are scarce. I have slowly been stashing parts as i can find them but as of late things have dried up. Let me know what you find out, havent been to Maui in years.
