1978 CB750f - paint
« on: December 13, 2006, 02:08:24 PM »
Well, I 'm looking for some ideas on paint and decal colors.  I'll change the decal color once I figure out what I want ???  I was thinking about painting the bike light gray - close to a primer gray.  I've all ready sanded the ugly gold from the gas tank emblemsl, now they're black and silver.  The decal might be light yellow on inside followed by white and black stripes around.  I'd like to find a site with as many color combinations as possible to help with the selection process.   Thanks all.....

snickram,

I too am planning a complete overhaul and re-paint on my 78 750F. I have one member producing a really neat line drawing of the Super Sport that I will use as a color fill or paint by numbers to see what various options look like before I start. If you would like I am sure I can provide the same drawing for your purpose...

Feel free to post that for all to enjoy!  I've got some hair-brained paint schemes myself that I want to look at on paper before I start hanging tarps all over my garage.

Wow, that would be great because I need all the help I can get..  I'd really like to see an image of my paint scheme before following through with it..  I'll be using a reproduction decal but changing the colors..  Right now I'll be painting the bike lt. silver or gray?  In the decal gun metal gray will replace the black, white replacing the gold and a pale / light yellow where the orange is.  I've all ready sanded the gold decals down to the metal and painted the rest black.  I want to keep a somewhat stock look with a few modifications..  When I purchased this bike it was ran just fine considering the head gasket was really leaking.  I'm not sure if I want to put a big bore kit in or simply replace the gasket, I was thinking about an 811 kit instead of the 836 for longevity reasons.  I'm currently buffing my rims to a chrome finish and I'll paint the spokes a gun metal gray.  I'm also replacing the tires with white lettering tires, not sure what kind?  This is my first complete restoration and I doubt it will be done this summer?  I also have a bathroom to remodel and the wife is understandable wanting this finished..  If you guys have any cool ideas for similiar super sports please let me know..  Thanks everyone...  Sure am happy I stumbled across this board, extremely helpful !!!

could that line drawing be made available for others through this site? I think many other 750ss owners could profit and enjoy.

big blue is doing the work converting a picture to a line drawing. I think we should all ask big blue to see if he would provide such a drawing for all to use. And then buy him a beer whenever we get a chance...  ;) I have a good feeling that it will be just what the doctor ordered. In the Looking for a Line Drawing thread big blue provided an example he was working on of a HD. Looks perfect!

I've changed my color scheme again..  Now I'm thinking 2006 ford mustang lime green, man I hate these color decisions..  I'm sticking with this one though!!

The way i look at paint decision, you first have to decide what impression you want the bike to give. in other word, choose a theme, old school. similar to stock, wild.. then post a picture of your bike with your parameter, color preferences.. something will pop up.

if you choose a theme or personality to the bike, different colors will probably fit, and you will like them because it says what you want it to say. so, you wont be disapointed of your decision

someone mention mustang light green, it would look in the theme of CHIPPY's bike, which is one i love because of the vintage look, and he keep a color that no one else would have kept, and it look really good.

Interesting that this came up. I've been talking with my sister about the finishes for my bike.

You've heard that companies pay professionals to design the colors and textures for their products...computer stuff, shoes, kitchen mixers, basically everything you buy from major manufacturers. Well, she's one of those designers. So after listening to her groan at most of my ideas, I've got her on board to help me out. Kind of a bitter pill to take since I'm a graphic designer by trade, (and there might be some sibling rivalry in there too ;)), but I'm leaving this one to the pro. The one big thing she keeps hammering into me is to think of the bike as a 3-D whole: darker/flatter finshes will cause components to "fall back" while brighter/glossier finishes will "come forward". So I'm starting to think of the bike in terms of "color chunks" rather than trick little individual pieces. Funny thing is, she won't even touch it until I give her a line drawing to work with, so it sounds like you guys are on the right track.  ;D

I have a blue with 77-78F stripes I bought off a hondachopper board a couple of years ago. Non stock colors in stock schemes can look really striking sometimes without being obnoxious. I used to have the body set sitting on an F I was working on and every visitor to my garage used to comment on how pretty it was and everybody asked "is that stock" Just a generic medium blue metaillic and generic gold.

My next bike is going to be 2007 Jeep rescue Green. I saw the color and I really really like it. I am not 100% sure I want to go with the stock K3-K6 honda graphics or if I want to go something wilder. I may still paint my kawasaki triple that color instead and use the 72 h2 graphic scheme (in non stock colors).

The only advice I can give you is to stay away from non-metallic grays unless you are shooting primer. There are some exceptions (porsches seem to pull it of sometimes with dark and medium grays), but for the most part the flat sides of a cb750 will not be acccentuating enough to work with this color without some kind of texture. Just my opinion.

One color scheme I would always really like ot have tried is the 78F scheme but the base color is a dark charcoal (non metallic) with Silver and Red metallic making up the F stripes (and continuing the stripes on the tail which always looked good to me). Actually you couls sub just about any color for the red and it would probably look great.
