I'm in Trouble Now - New guy, Pile o' Parts
« on: October 25, 2019, 11:40:12 AM »
Hey guys.  I'll just do a brief intro here and dive into the project in another thread.  Phoenix Metro area, SW USA.  Mature rider with roughly half a million 2 wheeled miles behind me.  Most on Japanese, but lots of British stuff in the 70's.

Currently have a shop full of bikes:
'78 GL1000 hot rod (don't laugh, was a labor of love and gets tons of comments)
'79 CBX Custom hot rod (purchased from orig owner who had MANY of them.  This was his last.  He's in his early 80s)
'97 Valkyrie Bumblebee Tourer (bumblebees were only Std OEM, I converted it)
'83 Kawasaki Voyager - going on a serious diet.  Probably 200 lbs lighter and a work in progress

Why I'm here:

Recently picked up a couple of SOHC CB750's.  Both basket cases.  '78F together but rough.   '74K in a million and one pieces.   Friend of a friend passed away and his son needs to sell the house.  The two 750's and a CB400T sold as a lot.   All rough as heck having spent a decade on a Phoenix back porch.

I probably have two viable projects here, but both will take lots of time and money for an end result less than the cost of getting there.  At least the price of admission was favorable...

I do have one question:  I had a 77K model way back when.  I don't recall, but what are the differences in the K (74) and F (78) frames?   Are they similar enough to be interchanged or are there critical bungs or tabs welded onto the frames for one or the other?

Thanks for letting me in the door.  I'll be quiet until I dive into one or the other of these.  (It'll have to wait its turn after the Kawi)>

The K7 has a wider swingarm, and wider upper shock mount on the left, to accommodate the front engine sprocket which is mounted 10mm further outboard than earlier models. The oil tank mounts are also different. That's all I can think of right now..
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Thanks guys. As a member of a number of cycle and other forums, I know it can be a chore welcoming the new guys. Hats off to the senior members here. I look forward to picking your brains.

Hi DesertRefuge -

Good to have a project or two in the 'hopper for future :)

Sounds like you have your question answered, regardless, here's a couple of links for you if you have not found them yet:

http://honda750expert.com/ seems to a fairly comprehensive run down on part differences and fit between model runs...

http://www.jk-data.fi/honda/workshop.html has tech info on the K7/F2 with torque values, which should be good for your project as well

Cheers!
