Newbie quesiton - manual, frame
« on: October 24, 2019, 05:48:41 AM »
have a new to me 78 CB750, a bike I lusted after as a kid, and looking forward to diving in. There is a dizzying amount of material on here, quite the community, need to do a deep dive with scotch, a hockey game on TV and a laptop  ;)

I see all the resources for manuals here but am thinking of a Clymer or Haynes, as have had good experience with those in the past, any one better for these bikes?

I need to weld some frame tabs back on that were cut off by previous owner and would like to find exact measurements

Any input appreciated

Clymer is owned by Haynes now, best manual is the Honda one and the 77/78:had their own dedicated manual unlike the erlier models that had the original cb750 with a new "supplement" every model.
Dont think there are any frame dimension pictures in any except the very early one.
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

found a pic of the frame, WITH THE TABS but was hoping to find measurements somewhere so I'm not guessing where the tabs go back on

Highly doubt you will find any manual that has that info since tabs arent normally cut off and welded back on.

Best bet is to find a guy here that has a K7 [or 8] frame and have him give you the measurements needed.  Sorry, I sold both mine.

I had a member ask about mounts, which I found 2 of three that we cut off.
He may take them.
However we have another 78 frame with bend damage, if the price matches the work, we might be able to cut off top section intact  to sell. That way you have the measurements, and if you grind out the frame tubing, you end up with an intact mount. Unless a mount is cut carefully, and the remains on frame, are not ground off, then there is usually material missing between the cutoff mount and frame, making for a lot of fitting.

hmmm, had not thought of that, maybe needs a bit more tooling as remnants were definitively ground off frame after what appears to be a thin cut off disk used to take tabs off, anyway it ion on the list, thanks agian
