K7 K8 CB750 tank latch repair.

In the process of getting my 78 cb750 running I wanted to fix the tank latch. I found some info here about one of the guys using a small hood latch you can find on Ebay and Amazon.  I found a latch that was close and looked like it would fit. Made a small cup to hold the ball end and used the old key latch clip to hold it in place.

Went to eBay.
Searched, push button hood latch.
Got 1700 hits, different colors, looks just like one in pic?

The ball stud mount is a really elegant solution, using the spring clip is clever. Nicely done!

You know those two tabs on the underside of the lid behind the latch? I noticed yours are caved in too, just like every other K7/K8/F0-F3 and A model with the fuel door that I've ever encountered. Those tabs align with the raised center of the fuel cap when the cap is properly secured and should stand up flat and level across the top. Someone has shut the door without properly closing the fuel cap. I have yet to find a fuel door that does not have those little tabs caved in. Just a curious observation, kudos on the pin mounting, I'm planning on doing something similar.

I kind of missed the add on discussion from when I originally did this and I had a bunch of other projects at the time.  Things have kind of slowed down some.

I'm thinking I can do a run of the cups and probably buy the latches as they come in pack of 4.  I thinking to sell the latch and the cup for $25 + shipping.  I don't really know how to do international stuff so I guess I've got to keep it in the US.  What's the best way for payment? Check?

Things to note.

1. The top part lifts the cover about 1/16 inch (the lip).  On my bike,  the cover sits a little higher in the front but the cover seems to match the rise all the way around.  Not sure how it does on other models.  Is the original tank latch the same across models?

2. You need the top latch clip (not supplied).


I've included the drawing of the part if someone wants to build one themselves. If someone wants to  undercut my price they are welcome to also.

It's 6061 aluminum.   Turned on a lathe.

I wonder if a brake hose retaining clip could be substituted for the Honda clip?
