RCB1000 Cylinder Head
« on: November 07, 2019, 01:10:04 PM »
I was ordering parts for another build and got side-tracked by pictures of the beautiful RCB1000.... Anyway, I have a question that I've always wondered, but never found an answer to.

If the RCB used a DOHC cylinder head, but Honda didn't offer a DOHC head until 79' (unless I'm mistaken), what head did the RCB use? Again, I'm it's been asked before and I promise that I have searched. Was it something in house that eventually made it's way onto the commercial 750?

It was a factory race engine, so a bit different to the DOHC road bikes. If you are on Facebook, look up Team RCB Racing Caillou Bédier , they have been rebuilding an RCB over the past few years, including if I remember correctly getting a whole new cylinder head cast.

I figured it was something fancy that Honda did. That's pretty amazing that they were able to get a head cast.

The earliest versions were CB750 lower ends with special cylinders and heads.  They were very much sohc CB750 based machines.  They progressively got more sophisticated between 1976 and the CB900 based bikes.  There is a great website full of information about these bikes https://www.vf750fd.com/Joep_Kortekaas/honda_endurance_history.html

After checking out the link I noticed Mike Baldwin sitting in the pits behind the 1980 machine. Met Mike on several occasions at Loudon, NH.....a very humble and engaging man.
