Egyptian Cafe
« on: February 01, 2007, 08:25:59 AM »
Not to mislead but,

I took the attached pic from the roof of an Egyptian cafe on a recent trip.
No indication of recreational motorcycle riding in this city (Cairo) of more than
12 million embattled souls.

Were you in egypt for business or pleasure?
I was in the area for 3 months.  I really got to soak up the culture.

Kind of a Photo Safari--Other photographers along.
Flew to Aswan & came back on a boat past the temples.
Karnak of course is a knockout!
I could have used more time.
You must have been on business, I'm guessing.

No, not business, I was in between school and my old man was working in Egypt at the time and asked me if I wanted to visit.  So I stayed until my classes started up again.  Being able to see the old ruins at Giza, Karnak, Abu Simbel and artifacts at the Cairo museum was well worth it.  the stuff there is amazing!
While I was there I went to Cairo, Alexandria, down to the Sinai peninsula, Sharm el Sheik, and a few places in Israel.
But unfortunately I don't think I'll be going to that area again, the way things are looking in that part of the world. :-\

Rhonda750F,

You're right about the difficult nature of that area.
We had armed guards with us the whole time.

The title of this subject provoked images of a camel with lowered bars and rearsets   ;D
Egypt seems like a cool place to visit if they could just settle down over there.

I had the fortune of going there back when it was relatively safe and they still let you actually climb around on the pyramids. You just can`t grasp the immensity of these without spending an afternoon climbing up the side and partying with hippies up there till sunup. :P

When I lived in Israel, we used to load our backpack full off wodka ("illegal" in egypt) and go down to to Sinaî and trade it for weed (illegal in Israel). I wouldn't hesitade a moment to go on a holiday in the middle east, it may seem more dangerous than it is in reality. Our media have a way off blowing things out of proportion. Going to Israel (or egypt) is no more dangerous than going skiing or riding a motorcycle.

You mean I'm not the only Israeli on the forum?  I'm no longer unique?

Where did you live?  When I was a college student (in the late 70's), we'd cut school and hitchhike down to the Sinai and spend a few days snorkelling and living on the beach.  Some of the most beautiful, accessible coral reefs anywhere.  Didn't trade any contraband, though.  Once it was handed over to Egypt, we didn't think the conditions were so favorable.  Later I spent time in northern Sinai, near Yamit; but the Med coast of Sinai is quite different from the Red Sea side.

Right now, the wife and I are trying to figure out what bikes to bring back with us (and how much that will cost!!!).  Probably not moving back for some time yet; so we'll see which bikes we still own by then.

Hey Tom,

No disrespect to you (seriously); but I thought an upside down flag was either a) a recognized sign of distress, needing rescue or b) disrespectful, depending on the context.

What gives?  (Again, I mean this with all respect.)

This is distress. Our troops are wasting time defending oil interests, much like Vietnam for Oil and rubber interests. Let's all keep in mind that the BULL SHYTE in Iraq has NOTHING to do with 9/11.

As a previous military man, I have to say that out troops are failing to defend us again "DOMESTIC" threats.
