750F2 clutch
« on: August 08, 2020, 12:37:42 PM »
I removed the clutch from a 77 750F2 because all at once there was no tension on the clutch cable and the cable was fine and no adjustment helped. When I pulled the clutch cover I noticed that no oil dripped out which I am used to seeing when you remove the cover from the engine case. I removed the basket with the plates and discs and saw almost no oil inside the housing. The discs had only traces of oil on them and the first disc which I think is called "A" had lost some of the pad. The other discs seem to have a rust coating on them which came off and the discs themselves miked to the correct thickness but I am replacing them. I have pulled and replaced a couple of clutch assy. but I never saw one like this. I don't ride this bike all that much as it is set up as a  cafe bike but it is always kept inside. It was inside all last winter and I then rebuilt the carbs and got ready to ride it when I noticed the clutch problem. When I put it away last fall it seemed fine so has anyone had a similar experience?

Its a dry sump engine and if the oil pump stopper valve is working like it should the oil is all in the oil tank
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

The clutch cover rides pretty high in relationship to the sump (oil pan). Resting on the side stand I can service the clutch without dripping any oil as well, totally common. The missing friction material could very well cause the loss of engagement you describe, depending on how much was lost (no picts?). Follow the manual for reassembly and initial set-up:

>Loosen the lower cable adjustment all the way in
>Loosen the upper knurled adjuster at the lever all the way in
>Back off the lifter rod adjuster
>Adjust the lifter rod first
>Adjust cable at the lower adjuster first (where it enters the clutch cover)
>Final fine adjustment is made at the lever.

thanks for all replies I have six new friction discs from partsnmore but the single disc that goes in first doesn't look any different than the six other discs. The first disc that came out of the bike was different in that the metal tangs are wider than the others and the pads are configured differently. Maybe it doesn't matter but I was expecting six ,138 discs and one that was different. As far as I can see I have seven discs that are identical so I emailed partsnmore about the matter before put the clutch back in the bike, I only want to do this once.
