oil pressure warning light
« on: November 19, 2019, 08:46:23 AM »
Good morning. 1973 cb500. When I first got the bike earlier this year the oil pressure warning light would come on when I turned on the ignition switch. Then it got to a point where I had to jiggle the key to get it to come on. Now it won't come on at all. Is this a common problem? Any ideas? Thanks.

Common? No.
It's odd if JUST the oil light doesn't work. The oil and neutral lights get power from the same wire, and turn on when their respective switches provide a ground path.
So, if the neutral light works OK, maybe a loose connection on the light socket, failing/failed bulb, or a connection problem between the switch and light.
If you disconnect the pressure switch wire and ground the wire, the oil light should come on. If so, and it's still off when connected back to the switch, the switch has failed. If it does not come on when directly grounding the switch wire, check the bulb and all connectors on the ground and power wires.
The lamp power isn't separately switched by the keyswitch, that should just tap off the black wire... so a bad keyswitch would also have you with no ignition or lighting power.

It seems that the oil pressure switches on our models fail sooner or later. They're cheap to replace. Caution: special thread. Do not force them all the way in.

So if I change my oil pressure sender are there any tips? Does the oil pump need to be primed? Thanks.

No. Just replace, but careful: do not force it all the way in. It's a special, conical thread.

Oh BTW  do you recommend any sealant on the threads?

Won’t hurt, liquid, not tape. Some new ones actually come with sealant already there. Just don’t tighten too hard..,..,

Good morning. MY neutral light was coming on but my oil pressure light wasn't. I grounded the oil pressure switch wire with the key on & the light came on. I replaced the oil pressure switch & all is good now. Thanks for all of the help on this subject. :)
