750K2 help with sputter.
« on: November 30, 2019, 04:59:17 PM »
I have a CB750k2 I built from some baskets. having an issue with cylinder#3 sputter or misfire right around that slow Cruise 2500-3000 rpm. She runs like a pro above that and idles very nice but around or less than 1\4 throttle at that 3rd gear slow steady she looses 1 cyl.    I did a carb sync with gauges, cleaned slow speed jets, new plugs, new coils, stock air box. 4-1 headers, tappet setting, timing chain adj.. clear tube float set about 3/8' from seam.
Once after blowing out and wire cleaning slow jet she ran good at that speed in neutral on the center stand for a few minutes but then lost that cylinder again.
The tank is fairly clean but it has some rust spots in it. i have a clear inline gas filter with a couple of small chunks caught in it.
no apparent boot leaks.
my next move is to check the tappet setting again and should they be set at TDC or 15deg. past?
Been reading this forum since i started this project. Most of you guys are Great! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Thanks for your input.

The fact that after cleaning a jet it cleared up and then started missing again, plus you said the "R" word rust reminds me of my similar struggles with a gl1000. Don't overlook the possibility that the jet sucked more junk. I'd check the petcock screen and even though I have had trouble with them on a rare occasion, consider an inline filter.
I once had a friend with a similar nickname except he had no cat, it reminded me of him.  Anyway, good luck.

Cool Thanks. I have an inline filter and see 2 small pieces in it. I'm going to clean the slow jet again and run it from a bottle and see what happens. what is your take on the tappet adjustment on TDC or 15deg. after?

I had that name from my old days of a fish boat captain after eating all the fish.

On TDC for each cylinder, or you can set the slack intake on 2 or 3 and the slack exhaust on the [other] 2 or 3 while #1 or #4 on TDC.
