To chrome, or not to chrome. THAT is the question.....?
« on: December 07, 2019, 07:05:30 PM »
The left side left cushion is pictured, but the right side is not as bad.  Can these be rechromed?

I thought to disassemble, let them sit in rust remover for a while, then sand (not sure what grit), and then let a chrome shop have at it.  I've read that rechroming coil springs requires a "special" process, diffrerent from rechroming a non-flexible surface.  Makes sense.  Has anyone had experience in this arena?

Is that bike a 1971 750 ? 1970 and 71 had the black inner body for those 2 years only if your doing a perfect resto.

In Ontario you can buy a new set of repro shocks from Vintage cb760 for less than a Shop will charge to chrome one spring. I have not had anything plated for years. It’s cheaper to search for a good used replacement, NOS or aftermarket part.....

I had a set of shocks that looked about the same as yours. I disassembled them and cleaned the chrome using electrolysis and was very happy with the results. Not perfect, but very acceptable.

If you haven't had anything chromed for a few decades, the price now will stun you. Chrome shops are hard to find and there's very little chrome on new cars now.
I've been told that pollution and VOC laws have made it near impossible to open a new chroming shop anywhere near residential, and has increased the operating costs of doing it many times over from what I paid in the 70s. There were chrome shops aplenty then, usually specializing in replating car bumpers but most would do bike parts.

If, however, you are doing the full-dollar show-style resto and need that kind of precision and chrome, PM me for details. There is a shop in PA who do my uber-fancy parts. No, they are not cheap(!), but they will, if needed, rebuild the part first. I had some header pipes for a 750 rebuilt first by them, then chromed, and they make the factory parts look like prototype pieces!

They went onto a 750K5 named 'Baby" by its owner, who brought [her] to me with 67k miles on it (and in nice shape!) for a 100% resto-mod rebuild. I've got pics of that one somewhere around here, in Antares Red by a custom painter. The paint and chrome outstripped the cost of the whole-bike rebuild.

I would blast the spring and paint it black. But that's because I'm not partial to chrome.

I have other parts that could do with new chrome as well.  I had a speedo backing plate rechromed about a year ago, and it came out an 8 out of 10.  Cost $25.  IMO they did not notice some pitting on one section of the concave rim, so they chromed right over it.  But they did repair a small hole that looked new afterwards.  PM being sent.

Just an FYI...... I bought two new chrome speedo and tach backing plates (1975 cb750F)  from my local Honda dealer. Honda Canada still has them in stock. They were about Cdn$30 each.....

Ok buy it and compare or do this..
Measure length,  inner diameter, outer diameter, wire size..... now you can compare,
But note if coils look the same all the way or are closer together on one end...
