Question - 1972 Honda SL350
« on: August 11, 2019, 04:36:46 AM »
I just picked up this bike as a project and am still trying to decide what to do with it, classic or cafe... Anyway my question is that this bike has a stripped shift spindle. I know the carbs are different but will a CB350 shift spindle work in this bike? I am hoping they are the same. I hope someone here will be able to answer my question and if there are any other major differences clue me in.

Thank you!!

Don't know the spindle answer but did the bike come with good original exhaust pipes. If so the would be a major bonus.  I had one of those back in the 80's for awhile, always liked the looks of them.

How stripped is it?

Can you post a picture?

I really think a CB or a CL will work. I used a CL in my CB.

Check using the parts fiche at places like South Sound Honda. That will tell you if Honda swapped them.

The clutch or primary is different from the others on the 2 years of double down tube frames, so make sure the shifter will fit.
And let me know if you have spare primary stuff.

If it's complete and in decent shape I'd keep it original.  Not that many of them made, and a lot of them got thrashed.  Stock mufflers are practically unobtanium, so if yours came with good mufflers you are very lucky.  I agree with Hondaman, check the fische to be sure about the shift shaft.

If anyone's still interested, this question has been answered on the HondaTwins forum.  Essentially, the K2 arm is slightly different to the K0 arm - something to do with the K2 not having a starter motor.

As far as exhausts are concerned, pretty much exact K1/K2 replicas are available, although they're not exactly cheap.  The really tough ones are the K0's, along with the chromed cover plates . . .

I know that this topic is pretty old. But, thought I'd post a photo of my SL350K2, that's not completely stock (especially the
exhaust), but it's mine & I'm proud to have it. That's what matters. So, I'm posting here, to see if there will be any others who
might have input, on the SL350s.

The previous owner came up with a black low mounted 2 into 1 system and put it on there.
It is in great shape, but being a low pipe on this sort of motorcycle, doesn't make any sense. And the way the pipe is
routed, the side stand mount was bent outward slightly, by the previous owner and this causes the SL to lean over
more, when parked on the stand. SO, I am working on putting a CL exhaust on it, except it will be completely
blackened & might be using short reverse cone megaphones on it.

Currently, the clutch is stuck. And I have tried to break it loose, but it just doesn't wan to give. So, I will be going into it
           and take care of it.

I wonder, did the op get theirs going.

I'd like to see some pics of the op's bike and your Bill.

Like to see that exhaust work, as I'm going to go through the same.

Thanks

I am working  on getting a photo posted. I thought I have it on my PC, but couldn't find it. So, I transferred it from my
cellphone and it was supposedly accomplished, but I still haven't found where it went. I hope you'll bear with me, I'm
sometimes, kinda hit & miss with my P/C & doesn't help that I am using an I Phone & STILL learning on it, as best as my
     old brain will allow.

Mine runs, but I need to take care of the stuck clutch, getting an exhaust set up, like I want & then I will be setting it up
with lights. I have the headlight & mount pieces. I also have the tail light mount bracket, BUT, the tail light is toast. I DO
however, have an extra CB77 Tail Light & a Lucas Style Tail Light. I just have to decide which one to use. Kinda leaning
toward the Lucas Style (like the older British motorcycles (BSA, Triumph, Royal Enfiled & such used. That way, I would have
the CB77 tail light, in case I do another CB77 build. I'll work on getting photo(s) of my SL posted soon as I can.  ;)

If this works, it isn't the best photo, but I will try to get a better one, to post up here.

Oops, it's the same photo. Sorry about that. Trying to do several things at one time, doesn't work out to well, for me, apparently.

Looks like a 19" front wheel with the 21" forks, Bill..

I've got both setups.....19" and 21".

Thinking of doing a brat style build so will use 19" w/CB500 forks.....wish I could use the 21" with the CB500 forks, we'll see.

Well, actually, mine had the 21" front wheel. And, is that a CB500, derived front the 450 or the CB500 Four? Hope I am not asking a seemingly dumb question. I haven't even thought of doing any swapping around, in that area. But now that you have mentioned it, I just might give that some thought.

I have to ask, by using the CB550 forks, where will you go from there, as far as the axle & front wheel (500 axle & a rim laced up with a 500 hub?) I haven't done much switching around, of those parts. Myself, I have a complete front fork, from a Honda VT750, that I hope to use, someday, on something (But, of course, this would be on a street machine).

I need to get some better photos of my SL, so the exhaust can be better seen. I have a home built exhaust, I bought off ebay, that is for a 450, that is a great design for a scrambler (off-road), but of course, it won't fit my SL350 (unless I tried to fit a 450 motor in the 350 frame and I wouldn't even be possible. I do have a place I could use THAT exhaust, BUT don't know if I will ever be able to get to that one or not. BUT, that's another story.  ;)

Bill, seems we took over his thread from the OP.

Sorry about the the threadjack The_Rooster.

I've got an original 19" wheel w/new tire, and an original 21" wheel from the SLs.

The 21" will only fit the longer forks, the 19" fits using the same axle for both wheels.

Took a few different tries to setup an axle for the 500 forks to the 19", I think a regular CB350 axle ended up being the one.

Course fitting different spacers was included into finding the right setup.

At least with the 500 forks, I now have an option of putting a front disk brake.

I have all parts needed, except the front wheel and disk.

So I'm in the market for that, just waiting for the right stuff to come up, at the right price.

Too much "get rich quick" stuff out there with too high of prices.
