Wrong spokes?
« on: December 14, 2019, 05:11:08 AM »
So i ended up getting the spoke kit from david silver. The Aftermarket kits, (PSPO 44606-300). my hub is from a 1975 Cb500 K1

They seemed to be the correct lenght but i am not sure if the outer spokes has the correct bend? this is how it looks right now before trueing the wheel. This is the front wheel, its the same kit listed. They seem to long in the bent part. the hub has marks where the spokes where rubbing before that is also the same marks i followed while lacing.

Also, does anyone else have problem dispplaying the pictures in this thread?:

so, I can't find a 1975 cb 500 K1 in the official honda guide, or in a parts search. There is a 1975 cb 550 k1.
Maybe there is....
But if that is a a 1975 550 K1 hub, the DSS rear spoke kit is pspo 42601-283 which is a different part #. The spokes may not be the same shape between a 500 and a 550..

Usually, the outer spokes leave a mark in the face of the hub. Even after polishing you can see the light groove and I can tell I’m lacing the wheel correctly....... in your top photo, there is a hug gap. That looks wrong to me.

Thats the part number for the Rear spokes, those had the correct fitment its the front spokes that doesnt seem to fit. The Cb500/550 and 750 all share the same front hub as far as i know?

The oem is to the right, they seem to have slightly diffrent bends.

There are two different spokes, one has a longer "leg" than the other to accomodate the exta thickness of metal when you go from inside to outside.
There should be 20 of each and you need to sort these out and where they go first

If those are both front spokes in the second last pic, the left is not quite right, but it should work .
You will not always see nor should you expect the same quality in aftermarket parts  as in OEM.
And by the looks of it, the left spoke will sit at a slight angle to the hole, meaning it will likely start bedding in which will loosen the spoke tension.. and after a few times will seat firmly.
Not the best product, although I bet many bikes today get put together with these parts, and then not ridden much.

I would show that side by side pic to the seller and try to get something with a closer fit.

im not sure if it would be safe to use those spokes since they doesnt get locked in place as the others do. Maybe they will lose their tension over time. even tho they are aftermarket they are sold as a replacement part, perhaps they shouldnt if they dont fit.

That's what I have found on most aftermarket spokes , close but not quite right . Seen the exact issue on a set for a CL77 and I did not use them . Now I will do the looking and pay the price for OEM .

CB750 has same spokes and rims.
I have never compared with original that I have not seen for many years.

My K6 got new spokes and rims early 80's. Bought here from Honda spare seller. Rims the typical spare,  D.I.D  with size pressed on the rim sides.

New rims and spokes again 2013, this time from DSS.

I saw that it look wrong until I had turned the hub for correct angle of the first set of spokes going in from outside.

It look better when the other sets are in, those that enter hub from inside.
Here photos of my K6 with dirtiest wheel.

Wheel on bike, rim and spokes from DSS ordered 2018. Honda labeled rim. Only differerence more money, rim is DID made in Indonesia as the Aftermarket version.

Below wheel DSS 2013

Below restored wheel from Andy Cepok Germany. Yellow nipples.
This look like longer part into hub.

Thank you for the pictures, do you have some of the front hub aswell? The rear DSS spokes fit just fine. They are just slightly of OEM but well acceptable.

You dont seem to have this problem with the spokes going to far into the hole, maybe because the replacement rims is diffrent somehow. all my outer spokes are like this for the front rim. The spoke should rest against the hub (leaving that mark in the hub) also forcing the spoketop outwards and seating against the hub.

Front spikes from DSS

Yes, you are right. They look much taller at front. Both my bikes. K6 with dual rotors.

I had exactly the same issue.

Supplier suggested that the spokes would be fine when tensioned.

Absolutely not!

Agreed to replace with spokes with correct bend.

To add to the list, I have a set of the DSS spokes in their packets in the garage.  Can't remember whether it was for the 750 or the 450 (they share some bits) but like others have found, my experience was that there's something not quite right with them.

In my case, it was either the angle of the bend, the length of the bend, the shape of the underside of the domed end or a combination of some/all three.   I found that as I was lacing the wheel, the tension became so great I couldn't finish inserting all the spokes.

I reported back to DSS, but never got round to sending the spokes back.  I now send samples to a spoke manufacturer and get the copied in polished stainless.  It's a much more expensive way of doing it, but it's saved me time and effort in the long run.
