How to install Honda CB500K gas tank rubber?
« on: December 17, 2019, 03:38:36 PM »
My CB500 came without the rubber bit that fits on the rear of the gas tank, between the tank and the seat (The tank is just held to the frame with zip ties). I got a replacement, but the parts list doesn't do a great job of showing how to actually install the thing.

Can anyone show a picture of this rubber piece, as installed on their bike (CB500, CB550, CB750), and how I would attach it to the tank / frame / seat? I'm a bit confused...

thanks!

EDIT: If it helps, this is Honda Part# 17613-286-000

I don’t have a 500K, but on the genuine Honda part the “ pull tab” goes on top, facing the rear. Your frame should have metal tabs facing forward. The rubber block slides on the frame, from the front, first. Lay the tank on top of the rubber and then work the top layer (using the tab) over the tank flange.

it's the same design as most of the early hondas. you slide the rubber on front to back with the tab/handle facing back. Then you put the tank on and stretch the tab/handle over the metal tab on the tank. Here's a post from do the ton forum. looks like someone was about to chop up a perfectly nice 550 super sport ;) :

Your frame should have metal tabs facing forward.

Nope. Maybe the PO removed them...

Thanks, those pictures helped a lot. But then the seat somehow also connects to this little rubber doohicky? Or is it just the two side screws / brackets that hold the seat on the frame?

Also of note, the honda parts guide seems to suggest the rubber "Tab" should face forward.

That'll teach me to trust the official manuals.

Nope, the seat does not connect to the rubber piece.
