Extra ride #21 120 mi 62F

I postponed my start until lunch as it was 48F this morning, that’s ok for a February ride but a bit cool for summertime. The sun was out so the day warmed nicely to 70 F at the finish line.
I found these upended cars behind the Chelsea FD. I expect they were practicing extractions, but other practice cars I have seen have their roof pillars severed by the “Jaws” and the roofs folded back.

Ride #12  August 14 137 miles

I was looking over my previous posts and noticed no ride #12 posted, WTH?
I did the ride, I have the odo photos here they are.
I did a mid-ride fill up so resettable odo doesn’t jive.

My 67 year old sister joined the SES (State Emergency Service) here in Victoria, a volunteer organisation that deploy to car crashes, as well as all sorts of emergencies, and she has been trained to use the jaws of life to cut crash victims out of cars. I don’t have much interest in joining the SES, but operating a big pair of hydraulic scissors would be pretty cool. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

There were a few windows broken out of the cars, and it’s occurred to me that the practice sessions will be today. Too bad I can’t return. Chelsea is a small town, a wealthy small town, but maybe not big enough to have a rescue training site. So they just use the quiet public parking lot behind the FD. As it was the Chief would have objected to my presence. Think I could have pushed that red car over off it’s side pretty easy.
I saw a recent news story about Firefighters 9/11 Memorial stair climb. Many don all of their gear and climb 110 stories worth of stairs. At 67, I won’t be taking on new duties as your sister has Terry. Good for her, but I’d be a wreck by the side of the road the first time I saw a severed arm or leg, or worse. Training, OK, just don’t show me too many pictures. :o

Ride #10 today.  152.7 miles

On the hunt for more new fishing spots, I rode out to the Conestogo River.  Out in Mapleton, there is a dam/reservoir so I wanted to see it first hand.  Access to fishing the reservoir is through Conestogo Lake Conservation area.  The main road is posted no parking and the dam is labelled no trespassing.  I did find one legal parking spot on the dam (20 minute time limit) so I was able to stop and take a photo.  However, the Conservation Authority quickly sent out a large number of wasps trained to aggravate the crap out of anyone crazy enough to stop more than 2 minutes.  I think they saw the carnage on my windscreen and wanted revenge on behalf of the recently departed .  I quickly buzzed off.

The ride out was into gusting wind and the general area has an abundance of interesting smells from the surrounding livestock farms.  The ride back was much more enjoyable.  Don’t think I’ll be fishing there anytime soon.

Yeah mate, I'm with you there, when I was in Special Forces I was offered a job in the Australian version of SWAT, as a couple of the guys from my unit had migrated over and anyone with good shooting/Urban warfare skills were in high demand. I hadn't done my 20 in the army at that stage so had to say "no thanks" or I'd have lost my pension, but in hindsight that was probably a good thing, our "Supercops" haven't starred in recent years, especially in one particular incident at the Lindt Cafe seige in Sydney in 2014.

Our guys would practice on cars with their big tools in the parking lot of an auto junk yard/reseller place I drive by often. Chelsea must be an affluent place because their junk cars are far nicer then the ones I have seen getting cut up over here in Kazoo   ;)  We now have a neat place where they can set fires in these practice buildings and do other drills and may be ripping up cars there now.

Did another 100 miler + with my son on his new Honda 919 Sunday afternoon. Fantastic riding weather as it will be for awhile more here in Michigan. I've been riding my Bandit 1200 but swapped it out before we left for my GS1000. More comfy right now getting over some back ailments plus I had to show my son that these old 2 valve 1000cc mills Suzuki used could get down the straights pretty quickly and around corners well. He agreed at the end of the day !  ;)

Yep those old GS1000’s were great bikes Eric, Suzuki bought a Z1 and re-engineered the engine to make it look different enough not to get sued by Kawasaki, but built a much better frame, and they’re still a delight to ride. My mate Pete still has the one I told him to buy 15 years ago, but won’t sell it to me even though he’s retired it and rides a Honda VTR1000F.

He said he’ll leave it to me in his will, so in 20 years or so, woohoo! It’ll be mine! ;D

Ride 22  120 mi
We have had a couple of frosty mornings this weekend which gave way to nice afternoons. Today was a bit warmer and tomorrow will be better yet. I got out today and rode my usual loop: Home-Stockbridge-Chelsea-Dexter-Home.
I have mapped my travels this year trying to ride all the best motorcycle roads within a day ride and noted that I have missed a couple of my favorites: Dexter Trail out to Mason, down to Napoleon (to watch the skydiving) and Sharon Valley road. If the weather holds and the virus doesn’t get worse, I might get it done and make 25 rides. No whining from me this year about lack of seat time.
I was lucky to find the horse near the road and luckier for him to raise his head for a photo with my CB! Also, I went back to Chelsea FD and found the Ford chopped up a bit and the Mercedesnot roughed up too much. Somehow I missed the Mercedes photo, oops.

iPad > google maps (for the main loop) > screenshot > edit > markup (with highliter for side routes,
text boxes for comments and icons)

I don’t have a charging port on my CB or a Garmin or any special apps on my iPhone or iPad and I’m not a whizbang on this kinda stuff, but if you don’t try..... It’s a first try and it took some time. There are a summers worth of riding and photos here on this thread and I would like find a way to attach (locate) the photos to the map so they would pop up when clicked and you could see the cherry pie instead of the emoji.    👉🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍

Welcome to Michigan ! I have a friend in PA who is prepping land etc. for a spring build on a log house in the Traverse City area who has been making the trek often. Now I can hopefully go up there to play and not stay in a tent anymore !

Do you lay the route out in advance?
I can see your ET 11h 13min  your miles 692.6 top speed 84 mph.
Is it free? Easy to use? Does it kill your data plan? Does it kill your phone battery?

Thanks, I'm from here originally. I joined the Army 20 years ago. When I finished my 6 year enlistment, I stayed in PA, working in MD. A log house will be pretty cool for your friend to have up there. I'm trying to get a job with the US Forrest Service so I can move back home, instead of just visiting.

I think it was mid 50s when I started and when I finished. Maybe up into the 70s on the ride, but I didn't really check. It was about 12 hours, a little over 11 in motion. I have made the trip a lot faster than that, but this time I avoided the turnpike, since the tolls are getting out of control. This route will probably become faster as I use it more and become familiar with it.

The app is called Rever. I have the free version, the paid version does allow you to plan the route. I planned the route on Google maps and just had Rever running in the background. I had it running in the background when I did my iron butt ride earlier this month, but the screen was off because I was using my TomTom gps on that trip. With the screen off, I did not have to charge my phone on that ride. I had it plugged in the whole time on this ride since the screen was on to give me directions. My phone shows 72.6MB used by the Rever app in the past month. I did get up in speed at one point to get away from someone that was driving like a fool, but most of the trip was well below 84mph.

Thanks for all that info Roy. You are a few devices ahead of me including a GoldWing. But I can check out the free Rever.... and welcome home, enjoy the sunshine.

Do you know the Arcadia roadside park on M22? It’s worth a visit, take your lunch and binoculars.

We went to a Gettysburg a couple years back, very nice, but the tolls were surprising.

I have never been to the roadside park in Arcadia, but it's only about 45 minutes from where I am, so if I get a chance I'll go check it out. If not on this trip, I'll plan time on the next trip up here. There is a lot to see at Gettysburg, and in that area in general. Antietam is also near there, and Washington DC with all the museum's and monuments. Harpers Ferry is also within close range.
When I first moved down there it was around $25 for tolls for a round trip, now it is close to $100. I can't justify that cost when it only takes about an hour longer to not take the turnpike.
I actually got a great deal on the Goldwing (it's my newest bike, being a 1997, and my 2001 Subaru is my only newer vehicle), a car dealership took it on trade and I talked them down to $2500 3 years ago. It had 56,000 miles on it, and now has 99,000. While I love my vintage Honda twins and SOHC4s, the Goldwing is the bike for long rides.
