80 mph on the speedometer is the fastest I can set the cruise control, which is 77 mph on gps. It runs somewhere around 3500 rpm at that speed.

Ride 23 120mi

Frank I remembered to go by Gardner-Wescott today. Is this the same place you asked about. I didn’t go in but there were cars in the lot and the employees only door was open.
I didn’t browse the entire catalog, but I did find the Honda page, attached below.
G-W is about 10 miles from home but a world away. The sleepy village of Salem has a general store and a Bible Church. The only thing disturbing the peace and quiet are the garbage trucks on their way to the Arbor Hills landfill.

The crash cars are still at the Chelsea FD. The Mercedes-Benz has been righted, the drivers door was cut off and the drivers side pillar was severed.

Wrenches alway fit, chrome doesn't chip, threads are always good.. and choices. . Allen's knurled, no knurl, stainless good stuff..

I saw a lot of other bikes out, mostly Harleys. It is a beautiful day for a ride.

This week has been spectacular in Ontario too. Warm (not hot) and sunny. Fall colours at about 50%. Monday I rode the K3, Tuesday the K1 got out for a lakeside patio lunch in Bridgenorth, with some friends. Wednesday, back out on the K3 and yesterday a long trip on my KLR650 (picking up parts for the race car). Today was so nice, I pulled out our K4 and my wife (she took my KLR, hers is buried in the shop) and I rode down to Lake Ontario. Another +100 mile ride. If this weather holds, I may ride more this week than the last two months! Great.

Another +100 miles today on my son’s K3 today Planning a run to Haliburton to see some real Fall colours, Sunday. It’s about 40 miles north of here, and there is a fantastic “lookout” high above the lake.....

Ride #11 yesterday, 352 miles on the small four.
The first hour or so was essentially a ride north through light fog which had already put the spoils on an early start. The goal was to get up to the Muskokas quickly, ride some nice curvy roads around cottage country then take the long way back home. Took hwys 403-401-400-11 in the interest of saving time. The fun began when I rode 169 through Gravenhurst and Bala and jumped on 118 west through Port Carling and continued around Lake Muskoka through Bracebridge before heading back south. Totally blew past my planned rest stop so you’ll have to take my word for it that the fall colours and lakes were absolutely beautiful. Took a detour heading home to ride River Rd which has always been on my list of roads to ride. There are some tight turns and I did have a moment on one of them where I felt the front wheel start to push out. Fortunately I got my left foot down, summoned all of my “inner Marc Marquez” and managed to keep the bike up...albeit with a little less rubber on the boot.
Undeterred I continued taking the long way home and made a run through Forks of the Credit (another popular road for motorcycles and sports cars). This is yet another speed controlled area with a heavy police presence on weekends. This area gets so over-run that they barrier off all of the side streets...the residents are that pissed off. Yesterday I see they’ve gone to a whole new level and installed speed bumps to slow down the hooligans. No need to go back there again.
I’m happy to report that the old girl held up pretty well. This was probably the longest and furthest that I’ve ridden her. Looking forward to more days like this.

I filled up around the 150 mile point on the trip meter.

I have been lurking this thread for awhile, in hopes of having my CB500 tested locally before doing a big ride and joining the thread.

Today was the day. Weather was perfect, 69 degrees at the start and 83 at the end. Route was up to Palomar Mountain NE of San Diego using a very curvy road popular with the sport bike crowd.

I have a new appreciation for you people doing these rides on vintage bikes! I was shaken by the primitive suspension, my butt felt like it was sitting on the seat pan, and sport bikers were passing me like I was standing still.

I also felt quite guilty winding out a 49 year old machine and making it work so hard with only 8600 miles on the odo. It seems more fitting to use it only for coffee runs in town... I know people used to race these when they were new but, going uphill on the really bumpy road seems like it's putting a lot of wear on the little guy. My other bike, a Suzuki DR650 makes the same ride seem pretty effortless.

My clutch engagement point changed quite a bit and by the end I couldn't get into neutral at all. It had worked fine for a month of in-town test runs, but maybe the extra heat sent it out of range.

Only 88 miles on this adventure so it doesn't count as Ride 1. But both the bike and I were ready to head back.

You are winding it well past 6k rpm and seeing 8k on the tach while riding? Right?
Sounds like you should consider new shocks and front springs... Front end is limited unless you put a pair of gold cartridge emulator from RaceTech in the forks. But a good set of Having or Ikon shocks on the rear should help quite a bit. Might be time to rebuild the foam in the seat with modern high density foam keeping stock profile if you wish to keep it with a stock style seat.

RPM: Yes, using those upper revs for long periods of time is what made me feel bad for it. It seems like the bike is from a less hurried era/place. Southern California drivers drive like everything is a race!

Suspension and seat: If I do those things, will it be in the range of modern bike comfort? I've been a dirt bike and dual sport person for the last 40 years and even old dual sports have pretty decent suspension travel. The only other street bike I've ridden was a 2001 W650, on this same road, and I don't remember all of the harshness.

Jeff, yes it's a 50 year old bike. Technology has obviously moved on from that. Rest assured that the engine should be perfectly happy at high revs all day long and will perform best in the range from 5k right up to redline. Suspension was considered poor even when these were new...so some maintenance and/or upgrades will pay huge dividends.

It won’t be as comfortable as a new modern bike after the upgrades but it will be money well spent. You will see a huge improvement. Front suspension will never equal modern front suspension but just new springs and proper oil weight and preload on springs improves things greatly. Gold emulators take it up to near cartridge Front-suspension design (conventional or STD) equivalent, a big step up. From there you could step up to std Modern fork Like a non-upside down (conventional) for from a 2004 until the USD Design changeover from a Yamaha R6, about $1500, depending upon prices you can get everything for and the machine work on hub, bearing carriers and spacers...
Or, a USD fork if you wish to go with GSX forks. Unknown cost on that one...

Rear shocks, Hagen or if you can spring for the little higher Ikons and have Nils swap the springs for the load rate you need you will be better off.
Then you will have a nicely balanced corner and canyon carving bike that handles great...only thing you will lust for is more power. What you give up in straight line speed can be greatly lessened or made up in the corners if your skills allow...depending upon if it is a very curvy road or one with lots of straights...
It will be much more entertaining.

Out of the box the CB550 has better handling than the CB750s.

I’m having a great week! Took the K1 out today, only 80 miles, but 8th riding day in a row! Weather has been perfect, fall colours improving every day! The K1 makes the most perfect howl on a 100pt original set of HM300 pipes. It is my favourite.

yeah jeff i hear ya on the dr650 thing,just made it today,another 100 miles metric style!ive been thrashing this 500 for years and they handle it no worries,short stroke equals quite low piston speed,anyway ive also just bought an old 87 tt600 and its a way better bike on the road,itll smash over anything!im in my early 60s and spent years and years on dirt bikes,the 500 is the first road bike ive really put any miles on.

I went on a two day ride on Thursday and Friday covering 323 miles. We rode up to Artiste Point on Mt. Baker. It was a little smokey from the fires and worse at the top. We still had a great time. We met a bunch of other riders up top and hung out with them for a while before chasing a couple of fast moving cars down the mountain.

I rode the 94' Concours because I needed to burn the ethanol gas out of it so I could fill it up for the winter with ethanol free gas at the Stilliguamish Tribe smoke shop 7 miles from the house. I think that's about it for road trips this year but there will still be some day trips when the sun pops out.

Ride 24 128 miles
We got a little break on the weather today. The high was predicted for upper 60’s. Of course I was spoiled by our late September sunshine, but early October has been frosty and rainy. So it was color that I went looking for, and sorry to say it is not quite here yet. I don’t know if this is my last ride for the season, it could be. But October 6 is way too early to pull the battery from my CB.

Yes Kevin last week was absolute crap as far as weather. Should be good all week and weekend for some more riding. I brought home a K4 last week because I missed the sound of squealing brakes and the feel of spongy shocks

Took a ride this afternoon on it and saw some pockets of pretty nice color but still a ways to go. Hopefully you enjoy some more fall rides weather permitting. Eric

Here in Tucson we have been meeting or breaking record highs with temps still 101-102, about 12-13F above average normal temps. But it was a record hot and dry year so far, so why should one be surprised it continues. We actually are going to have temps in 80s this Saturday and Sunday...we won't know how to deal with it. Temps will warm back into the 90s next week though. So, fall hasn't arrived in the desert southwest yet. Meanwhile, the Grand Canyon has been having morning blows of 28F. AZ has quite the range of weather. Once California has their monster quake and slides off into the ocean we will have some nice beachfront property too!
