530 VM Chain: Replace or repair
« on: December 22, 2019, 09:50:08 PM »
Pic shows the chain from a 1971 CB750K1.  Hanging, the chain links will almost hold whatever kinked or bent position you put them in.  One of the o-rings on the clip-style master link is split and the other three look to be a bit worn.  So not sure if chain needs replacing, a new o-ring master link, or just four new O-rings.  The best one I took off the master link measured 6mm ID, 10mm OD, and 1.8mm cross section.  Wondering what is best course of action.

A brand new RK or Regina oring chain will do that also when new.

Stretch it out and measure the length of pitches in owners manual and see if it’s in serviceable range.

K4 owner's manual (don't have K1) states new chain proper length, measuring 20 pins, is 11-7/8".  My chain measures exactly that.  Although very dirty, must be relatively new.  I'll research how to properly clean an o-ring chain and move on.  Thanks to all.

Stretch it out tight.

RK (Takasago) chain recommends their chain cleaner for their orings chain. Cautioning, definitely not to use gasoline, Kerosene, brake cleaner, carb cleaners, and the like.

Others claim WD40 (heavy Naptha/similar to kerosene) won't hurt the orings. RK specifically says no kerosene...?

Not sure about Regina Chain. I don't know if I can hurt a Regina chain.? I have a 520 oring one on CR500R and it's been through it all, including sand/mud, submerged in water. It never needs adjusting and has been pressure washed cleaned (definitely a no no) too many times.

And Rigina says clean theirs when heavily soiled with kerosene or water jet.......go figure...?

If the link is riveted too hard, chain will lock in a z shape. Easier to use metal sheet distances on both sides making it impossible to rivet too hard.

First time consumed 2-3 master links until good. I have distances since then. Some chains are sold with them
