5/16" barb petcock on CB550?
« on: December 29, 2019, 01:56:27 AM »
Are there any problems fitting 5.5mm ID fuel pipes to the 5/16" barbs on the Pingel or Golan petcocks? I've got 3/8" NPT bungs on my tank so am planning on using one of these suppliers. If it's an issue would the petcocks with a 6AN male outlet mated to a female 6AN to 1/4" barb fitting (https://www.anhosefittings.com/straight-push-lock-barbed-an-hose-end-fitting-6an-1-4.html) be a better solution? Thanks.

5/16" is just under 8mm ... you might stretch and force a 5.5mm hose on there but you risk it splitting and falling off from overstretching (naturally, it will split and spout fuel at the worst possible time). Even 1/4" at 6.4mm is a stretch but not as risky. The other way - fitting 1/4" hose on a 5.5mm nipple - is not too good and needs a tight hose clamp to not leak.

If a hose to hose adapter isn't already available, I would be surprised...and willing to make you one out of aluminum.  But don't wait long, I'll be away from my lathe soon, untill march.

Big thanks to Kerry for taking the time to machine me some reducers.  Hopefully the first of my fuel taps arrives soon. I might have to bring the bike inside as the garage is not useable because of smoke and dust from the fires
