Race Tyres
« on: January 02, 2020, 06:59:18 am »
Hey Boys,

I´m wondering which race tyres you guys use. Which pressures do you run? I´m using Avons since years on my Rickman CR"750"...

AM 22: 110/80 VB 18 soft
130/650 VB 18 soft

is there anybody who has race experience with Conti tyres (2CR / 3CR)

Cheers!

Ive got most of a season on the Conti 3CR tires here in the states. I really like how sticky they are and are comparable traction to the Avon soft compound, likely stickier. They are also far cheaper and easier to get here in the US. I adjust pressures as the day goes on to keep my 15% increase from cold to hot, but usually start with 32psi in front and 34psi in the rear. A hot day of racing does things to the rear and I frequently end up with starting pressures of 38psi for race day.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Hi folks,

thx for the replys.
Sounds great, so I guess I´ll try the Conti too.
I was really suprised from the performance of the avon tyres.
I couldnt imagione that the contis are stickier, so I´m happy that u mentioned that.

How´s the behavior at the limit- do they overheat easy?
I dint had any probs of this kind with the avons, so this would be a good info.

Many thx

Hi bergi
where do you race?
just one important comment on contis
they are radial so generally need wider rims than bias avons, specially the front,
the CR recommended rims width table says the 110 can work with a 2.50" but thats not my experience, most people ive seen incluidng myself run it on a 3"
the 130 rear can work ok with a 3" rim, but for some reason, the 110 front needs also a 3" rim to work best.
dont know what rims widths you have but take that into consideration....
Wet "feel" of the CR2 is not as good as the avons IMHO but judging from lap times ive seen in rain from better riders than me, not such an issue

i see that now the CR3 have more water channeling so i guess its better in the wet, but have no direct experience

Hi Turboguzzi,

many thx for the tip! Have to check my rims, but I think that it should work.
I´m racing in Austria- conditions here are very often a bit tricky... cold/wet (Avons work fine in such conditions)

Cheers

I don't have any wet track experience with the 3CR, but I have heard that the 3 is better in wet than the 2. It is recommended to run wider rims and I find that the 110 front on a 2.5" rim makes it so their are still strips at the edge of the tire, where the 130 on a 3.0" rear wheel, they aren't there. They seem to head up as fast as the Avons, but being a radial, they are quite a bit heavier, like 2.5lbs per tire heavier but that doesn't seem to cause any ill effects, and people still love them for what they are, a sticky, affordable, available vintage race tire. Despite feeling firmer than Avons with the edge of a finger nail, the durometer suggest they are very similar from a softness standpoint to Avon soft compound tires. With my 750 (360lbs) and me riding it (220lbs plus gear) I find that I get a lot of heat in the rear tire and need to start at much higher pressures in rear to keep within the 15% rise from hot to cold, as compared to the front.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Hi bergie, does your racing series have a website?
I might look into doing some rounds outside of italy this year, austria is close...
do you have a good class for a CB500/4?

Hi Turboguzzi,

no, its no race series. I´m just doing some specific races (most of the time hilclimbs) and some trackdays.
