Exhaust: 4into1 or 4into2?

Looking for a new exhaust setup for my 350f build.  Debating between a 4into2 or a 4into1.  Any pros or cons here?  I am leaning toward Delkevic for the 4 into 1.

Can't comment for the 350/4 but very happy with Delkevic for 750/4.

Great price.Great sound.

Stainless steel so will probably be still serviceable, when I start pushing up daisies!

I've got a friend with a Delkevic 4-1 on his 350F and he loves it. Mine's had a 400F 4-1 for 20+ years so it's not going anywhere. It's heavier but it's another option.

Generally speaking, 4 into 2 is better for mid range and 4 into 1 is better for top end.  In most applications, it won't make that much difference.  Hard to beat the Delkevic systems for materials and value.

Purely a cosmetic thing, to my eye, the more mufflers the better. Is 4 into 4 out of your price range?

I go 4-1 just for the weight,its a small bike so any weight loss is easier than trying to make more power from the exhaust system,ive never seen proper dyno details of any system anyway,the manufacturers will tell you itll gain x power and torque?yeah sure,get ya points a little wrong and its out the window anyway?

Let's face it guys, there isn't much power to gain or to loose. So I'm more for the optics and I'd choose 4-2 for the much nicer looks. Didn't know they were available. What brand has them? 4-1 makes the bike look like a moped IMO.

Yeah, 4:4 is too pricey for me, and I'm not sure I like the look (although it was stock).  I started with the assumption I wouild just get mac slip ons but my headers' chrome is toast and flaking in parts.  I like the look of 4:1 but was worried about power loss and the possibility of having to rejet (don't really wanna open the carbs again after spending all the time to clean and re-assemble).  Looking for under $500 and hopefully under $400.

True, and it's just for cruising around, not interested in squeezing all the performance I can outta her, but don't want to really make it suffer performance wise at the same time.

For 4:2 was thinking of using my headers and getting mac slip ons.  But after speaking with someone in the industry who favored Delkavic over mac systems it got me re considering.

The 400F option keeps it somewhat stock looking (or at least "period correct") and doesn't require any jetting changes, but you do have to switch out pegs and brake lever.

 I'm a big fan of the 400F exhaust. To me it's the prettiest pipe Honda made. David Silver has a really nice repro muffler for them too. It is very quiet though.

I've (just my 2cents worth),always liked the 4 into1 systems on all my toys. They, to me, look more ,hot rodish.

Been looking into the 400f one from David Silver and it looks nice.  I did just have my pegs powder coated though.  So I would just need 400f pegs and a 400f brake pedal?

That's right. My avatar has my 350F with 400F exhaust and pegs, if you want an idea. You will need to create a rear mount for the exhaust -- I just used a piece of angled steel. you will need to shave off just a tiny amount of the shift linkage on the left hand side -- the linkage mounts best if it is turned 180 degree on one end (I can post a picture later that shows what I mean). The rear brake lever sticks out just a little, but that's for clearance from the 400F exhaust's collector. The pegs will sit about 5-6 inches behind where the stock 350F pegs sit, but there is still plenty of room between them and the passenger pegs. The stock passenger pegs on a 350F mount between the pipes, so you may need to bend a washer to prevent them from turning when mounted without the 4-4 pipes - although if you have another system already this should be clear. The pegs will interfere with the stock kicker, but a kicker from a CB550F will clear them.

400F pegs used to be pretty easy to come by. I hoarded a few sets years ago when I was in the States and doing more buying and selling of 350Fs (and 550s, where they can work as well). Now they are a little harder to come by. You could probably find a set of pegs for $100-120, maybe less, maybe more, depending on condition. The last 550F kicker I bought was $30 a few years ago, but there are a few on Ebay around $50 now. David Silver Spares makes a brake lever for $52, but you could probably find an original one for cheaper in decent shape. There's a rusty one for $30 on Ebay now. David Silver Spares doesn't have the pegs, I don't think, but they do have the shifter from the linkage although its expensive.

On the down side, 350F pegs don't bring much if you decide to sell them to pay for the switch, although being freshly powder coated might help. Brake lever isn't worth too much either, but the kicker, however, is worth something as it is shared with the 400F (it just won't work on a 350F engine with 400F pegs).

For 574, or for the record I guess, this is my 350F with 400F exhaust and pegs. This photo shows that the brake lever sticks out a little bit to clear the exhaust, but I think it's basically the same as a 400F -- the fact that it's a little wider just makes it look a little funny compared to the stock 350F lever. But it doesn't affect lean angle or anything (at least not for me, and although I don't push it I do enjoy running this thing through twisties when I can).



This is the 550F kicker to match the 400F pegs. With the peg folded up, the kicker clears it just fine.



This the LHS shifter linkage. This is what I meant by having the linkage turned 180 degrees -- the mount on the shifter shaft side won't clear the 350F cover, so I spun it around, and that's why I had to shave off a little from, IIRC, the part that mounts to the shifter shaft. but it was .2mm or something, just barely touching it with a grinder, just to make the action smoother and so it didn't rub. The 180-degree turned linkage doesn't present any kind of problems -- shifts fine.

I have had this set up on my 350F for 23 years now. I bought the 400F exhaust first, from the crazy guy (meth guy, actually) who had a yard in Rye, AZ -- until it went up in flames 5 years ago or so, for $125. He had a clean set of 350F 4-4 pipes and wanted the same price, and to this day I kick myself for not getting the 4-4 or both. I went back a year or two later and he wanted $400 for the 4-4. I thought he was crazy, but I still should have bought them. I believe they went up in smoke when part of the yard burned -- they were in one of the areas that go torched. When I fitted the 400F pipes is when I realize they woudn't work with the pegs, so I went back and got them the next weekend.

Within a year the guy had started asking insane prices for complete junk -- he was a hoarder and suspected of cooking meth, which started the blaze. He lost all of his Brit bikes and Harleys and old Schwinns, and Bob's in PHX acquired what was left and opened their third yard, down the street from the other two. They let me have first crack at some of the Rye bikes, and I think I bought 4 or 5 all said and done.

Anyway, I'm sure nobody cares about the story, but that's what the peg and exhaust set up look like.

Thanks for the detailed write up!  Looks like you made it work and it has stood the test of time!  I keep looking for sweet deals on exhausts like the one you had but they are like a needle in a haystack these days!

400F headers in reasonable shape aren't too bad, and you can match them with the silencer from DSS. Regardless, best of luck!
