18 inch rim on cb750?
« on: February 06, 2007, 07:04:21 AM »
Good Morning All,

So, in my quest to get a slightly better handling cb750 I picked up an 18 inch rim from fellow SOHC'r Aptech77 (thanks!).  It's an 18 inch rim from a 1975 cb400f and I'd like to mount it on my 1970 cb750K0.  The problem is that the stock cb400 rim has a 4 bolt pattern for the front disc and the stock cb750 has a 6 bolt pattern (also, I'm collecting parts for a dual disc conversion as well).  Soooo, here's the question: can I swap the hub from my cb750 rim onto the cb400f rim and can I use (or reuse) the spoke from the cb400?  If this can be done, do I need a custom length spoke to lace the rim?

If anyone has done this before or has any insights as to what needs to be done (and what needs to be avoided), please throw your 2 cents in.

Thanks!

Good idea- I've an 18" (mag) front wheel on my 750 & it improved steering remarkably.

However, not sure about the 750, but I looked at doing what you suggest on my 550 to find that the 550 hub takes 40 spokes while the 400 rim takes 36....

I've laced an 18in front rim (40 hole) to my 550 hub. http://www.buchananspokes.com/ has a spoke kit for this set-up. I would NOT re-use spokes in my opinion. You can't use anything from the 400f wheel if it's going on a 750. Just take your 750 front hub and find a 40 hole 18in. rim and re-lace. That way you can still use your original rotors and speedo (although the speedo will be off a bit due to the 750 original rim being 19in.)

thanks.  I will check out buchananspokes website.  Any ideas about who can lace and true the rim after it's done?  I'd like to do this myself and save some cash but I'd prefer to have it done correctly and safely by someone who knows what to do, since this would be my first time re-lacing a rim.  Will any 18 inch rim work, or do I want to find one that has the same width as the cb400's rim?  I've also seen rims that are "shouldered" and some that aren't-what does that mean and what should I be looking for?  I'm a bit puzzled... ???
