Ah, the sound of the 390 FE engine! I had 2 of them: one was the "390X" engine, prelude to the one (390 GT) the Bullitt Mustang had (only mine was a couple years' earlier and had solid lifters that had to be set from time to time), the other was the long-legged touring version, capable of speeds well beyond the silly 125 MPH speedometer (went there, many times). Both had well over 300 HP, yet they got the same gas MPG (16 town, 19 hiway) as my current 4.0 liter V-6 engines in my cars (with only 30% of the power of those 390s). :(

I miss those cars...

Considered one of the best chase scenes ever filmed. Nicknamed The King of Cool Steve McQueen was a talented car driver and motorcycle racer. Loved him in On Any Sunday with Malcolm Smith. He died way to young in 1980 at the age of 50 of cancer :(

  • Tryin' To Slow Down "Time"!

In my own opinion (just an opinion, not arguing), Some people put way too much emphasis on objects, just because of the popularity of one person. Now, with that being said, I think I have seen about everything that Steve McQueen was in, to my knowledge (some, several times) I was in Japan, based at Misawa AFB, when "Bullit" was released and was able to watch it, at the theater on the base. I saw it several times as well. BUT, it really bothers me, when I see something go like this, when I have also seen the same sort of people, who were bidding on this Mustang, not put that same kind of emphasis out there, when the proceeds, that will come from an  item up for bids, that would be used, to benefit people with very serious Health issues and such. Oh, the bids will go up pretty goo & then stop, while the auctioneer works, in vain, to get it on up. BUT, people with enough money, that could help out even more, without putting a dent in their finances, won't budge.  And folks, as I said, I am just about as big of a fan of Steve McQueen, as anybody is & will continue to watch movies with him in them.

With that being said, it makes me wonder about the sawed off Winchester(s), he used, in "Wanted, Dead Or Alive"?

AND, for those of you, who know that I am mainly a Mopar Guy, it wouldn't matter what it was or what brand it was, I would still feel the same way. My feeling is all about People, with Serious Medical Issues, getting as much help, as humanly possible.

Ah, the sound of the 390 FE engine!

My '65 F250 is on its 4th engine, a 390.  The first two were 352s, the third a 390, and then the one in there now.  Not a high output version, but plenty of torque.  I was hauling a '51 Merc back from western Washington to Idaho on my car trailer with the truck a few years ago.  The car and trailer weighs as much or more than the truck, so I was trying to take it easy on the poor old thing and tried to keep the speeds 60-65.  But before I'd know it, we'd be going 70-75, so I'd back off.  There is a long, steep climb out of Farewell Bend, Or on I-84.  Again, I was trying to take it easy on the 50+ year old pickup on the long grade when I noticed a recent F250 pulling a trailer coming up on the left side.  I couldn't resist, so I hit the gas and pulled away from the new truck and didn't see it again until we were coming into Ontario.  Funny thing about that engine, it get 9-10 MPG whether the pickup is empty or pulling a load.

I might be able to help out a little bit on the MPG with that FE. PM me...?

My 76 F100 had a 390 with RV cam and flat top pistons.  It had a 2 barrel and single exhaust. Very torquey.
I would get  19 or 20 mpg on highway, so that would be 17 or so for U.S. gallon.

The original Bullitt is of course a "sandcast." More money than brains!

Agreed, but,
I forgot to say that the $0.047 Bullitt has no previous owner/driver issues.
...and there is no visible record of it being thrashed, either.

It really doesn't matter, cos I'm not getting either one, although the $ 0.047 Bullitt looks like a tremendous bargain vs. the beater.

Great truck. I had a 62 with a hole the size of a watermelon on the radiator. Just carried around jugs of water. Damned near indestructible.

  • Big ideas....
Especially egregious when Mickey Thompson's original streamliner Challenger ll sold for just 500,000.00. His son Danny just set a piston record of 450MPH a little over a year ago but had to sell it to pay off debt accumulated rebuilding it. He was hoping for a million and had a reserve on it BUT lifted the reserve once the auction got going secondary to debt......he had to sell it. A bitter pill for something that had been in his family for 52 years.

Considering collectors will pay up to 48 million for a 62 Ferrari GTO, the 3.7 million for the Bullit mustang doesn't surprise me but unfortunately that almost assuredly means the car will be parked in someones collection and just set there just like it sat for 40 years in the previous owners garage.

Yeah....the Ford FE engine was meant to DRIVE. It was easily the most-favorite car engine in my life.

Yep as far as I know the 428 is an FE and it's a torque monster, my uncle had one in his 70 GT500.
