Hi all I'm an old guy with an old b like that I got about 15 years ago. I striped out the bike and have been doing parts clean and rehab slowly. Question is can I pull out the clutch rod from the drive side without something falling out on clutch basket side? I couldn't find out in the parts diagrams. I want to replace the seals . Oh it is a 1973 Cb500 4 got  free with title. Been reading posts for a long time finally joined. Thank for all the good inspiration guys.

 Yes, you can pull it out. You may find that it is in two pieces; it's supposed to be one long rod. There is a ball bearing in the clutch lifer on the LH side cover/sprocket cover. Don't lose it. It may be a good time to clean and regrease the lifter assembly, too.

 Order two of the seals. Remove the old seal. Use a pocket knife or similar to *lightly* chamfer the case where the old seal was removed. Just enough to remove any sharp edges or burrs that may catch the new seal. Install a thin smear of Yamabond or similar (NOT silicone RTV) on the new seal and tap into place using a socket that fits the diameter of the new seal. Make sure it's square or flush.
 Lightly sand the pushrod with some very fine sandpaper if you feel any burrs on it. Reinstall and check clutch adjustment.

Just to add get a new, preferably genuine, clutch cable and get the routing correct to get a light(ish) operation and YES it is worth the extra for a genuine cable

With this one prices are much closer.
Maybe I need a new cable myself. I will definitely have the genuine one. It is very good. But come tomorrow I will first remove the non stock Dyna coils temporarily, just to see if it is maybe them that hamper the proper clutch cable operation by being in the way because of their ridiculous size.

Thanks guys just wasn't sure about another ball in clutch basket side. Scott I did pull the adjustment mech. I had to press it out , polished it greased and powder coated the cover that side was nasty.

Welcome Gary.  Those push rods are prone to breakage, they changed the setup when the 550 was engineered and manufactured.

You should start a thread in "Project Shop" area so we can follow along and answer any other questions you may have.

Thanks for the link Deltarider and Steve-O for the welcome doing a project thread would probably keep me motivated too. This is the bike I'm working on . I do my own powder coating on the small things in my home built oven. The frame is out for coating at a real powder coating place as of yesterday. Should have built the oven motorcycle size instead of bicycle sized. Done so far seat, electrical,  form with bars and controls , small parts refurbished and most parts ordered. Still need to break down the wheels to coat rims and hugs and put top end on motor. Oops on the photo orientation!
