Look up & down the track at the same time-I don't think so.

Camera was of a type called a Cirkut Camera.
Film moves as the lens turns.
Able to do 360's , 720's  etc.

Very interesting. Never saw one before, found this, though I suspect an older one.

Bob,

The new cirkuts work just like the old ones.
I've built a few cirkut cameras myself.
Here's a shot from what I call my 8x10 Rotary Reflex Cirkut.
360 degrees on 8x10 sheet film

I'm not a photographer type, but I had to check it out:

Ya gotta love designs that are elegantly simple.

According to the article, cirkkuts are actually old school.  There's a few good early cirkut photos here

I'd love to fool around with one for a week or so. I bet you can't drop the film off at your local Wal-Mart though. ;D

Can you generally describe how you synch the camera movement to the film (advance?)? ???

Bob,

Sync. of film movement with camera rotation is fairly straight forward.

Start with a circle.
The circumference of the circle is the amount of film moved in one 360 degree rotation.
The radius of the circle is the focal length of the lens.
that's it!
Of course optics reverse the direction that the image is moving when it arrives on the film plane.
And exposures are done through a vertical slit.
As an example:
a 28mm lens  needs about 6 1/2 inches of film movement per rotation.

to Kghost:

Yes,in the digital world, stitching accomplishes the same thing, but it is definitely not the Elegant Solution.

It it elegantly simple when you describe it. Thanks for the detail.
