Powder coat prep question
« on: February 03, 2020, 03:49:56 AM »
Hi guys,

I finally have my bike apart, preparing it to send to the powder coater. I have two questions with regard to the bearings and races:

I have new all balls races and bearings installed on the bottom triple. Can they be removed without damaging the bearings? If not, should I just rattle paint this part (after masking the bearings) as opposed to powder coating like the rest of the parts?

Do I have to remove the races from inside the staring shaft or can those simply be masked off before powder coating?

Thanks!

The bearings and races must be removed.  The powder coating place will sandblast the part before coating and baking @ 400F.  Any grease/oil left on part will mess up the PC.  If you are going to rattle can it, you need to make sure you either remove all old paint or have it very clean and make sure the can paint you use is compatible wit original paint or it may blister.

Easier and cheaper to use POR 15. It goes on perfect, self levels and creates a super hard and repairable coating. DIY
