1982 CB900 starter question
« on: February 05, 2007, 02:45:59 PM »
Could anybody tell me the different model bikes that the starters will interchange?  Like will a 750,1000, or 1100 starter fit the 900?

Thanks.

'smooth' centre section of the big starter gear all nasty? common fault, even in 1982.
Sorry, cant help with interchanges, I think the 750, 1000 and 1100 all fit. 750 is best bet for a good one or have it metal sprayed and reground

Thats what it sounds like PJ. It will sort of catch then all you hear is a spinning sound then what sounds like something rattling around in there. Its a buddies bike....he hasnt had nothing but trouble out of it since he got it. First it was a charging problem...now the starter. I told him he should have gotten a SOHC. ::)  ;D

All the DOHC starters interchange.

If the starter spins, it is ok.  These bikes are prone to starter clutch issues.  The bolts that hold the starter clutch on vibrate loose causing terrable rattle sounds.

Been there.  :(  (I currently have 4 DOHCs)

It spins on the crankshaft.
When the bolts come loose it sounds like a big end bearing has failed.
Usually the smooth rotor part on the big reduction gear gets munched up, far more common than the loose bolts
(I specialised in these things for 3 yrs)
Pull the left cover, Check the 3 bolts, if any are loose remove them and check for wear. If not, remove centre bolt holding ATD and slide big gear off crank end. ( its splined on, no tapers)
Remove starter clutch and you'll probably see indentations. ( the rollers may fall out, best to remove as a unit and lay it flat, gear up)
