Sourcing spares for a 77 400/4
« on: February 04, 2020, 11:46:26 AM »
Hi All - just about to start renovating my late fathers bike....a ton of questions...

1. The bike is moderately corroded (been stored in a shipping container for the last 5 years or so) under cover, but the damp has still gotten to it...i called a local chrome platers who quoted me (for an example 240.00 GBP + the carriage and + VAT (tax to you in the US) - am i wrong in thinking thats extortion? - ie they wanted 150.00 for fork tubes - i can see them new on ebay for the same price...

2. Spares: anyone got any link for spares...ie when i buy some NEW fork tubes :) ill need to rebuild the forks with new seals...

Just the first of my many many incoming posts...thanks to anyone that takes a stab.

Cheers

You're in the UK?
Your most useful connections, apart from the members here, would be DavidSilverSpares,

Depends what you want. A concours restoration can cost £8000 plus and even a good tidy can cost a couple of grand without any major expenditure. Think repro chromework and you can get the lot for £500. Rebuild the wheels yourself for about £350 with patience and tyres. If the engine is good, you need a service for around £120 including a new battery and budget £100 for a front brake rebuild which you will need. Spend around £50 on a good wire brush for a pillar drill and some zinc plating kit  to tidy up much of the fastenings and metalwork and add around £100 for fasteners. There will be other costs but that is the ballpark for a bike without problems and needing just a bit of elbow grease. Hondas are well made from lots of bits. You can get pretty well all of them but they are not cheap.
