What in the world happened to my starter clutch??
« on: February 28, 2020, 02:19:51 PM »
Has anyone ever seen this before? Before rebuilding, I never had an electric start (kick only) so I didn’t notice any problems. But now that I’m rebuilding it looks like I have a “tear” in my starter clutch! This can’t be normal right?

Ahhh cool cool cool. Thanks! Any idea HOW this would happen? Did a PO do something wrong that I can avoid?

Probably pressed the gear down in a press instead of moving all 3 rollers to their bottoms, lock with a thin pin in the small holes. Old style paper clip  pin, then mount the gear part by let it slide in place. Lock the parts together with strap or a wire until the bolt is mounted keeping all in place.

Use a new oil seal. Make sure to flip it right with lips aiming in right direction, to the oil.

Used to see that a lot on 500 twins
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Well thanks everybody. Looks like I’ll be buying a new Starter Clutch (Outer) as well as inner kit on Yamiya. Looks to run about $200 for the set up.

You can find good alternatives on eBay for much less. Plenty of forgotten low mile bikes sold as parts from US.

If the engine gets [fuel] "wetted" too much and then backfires, this can be the result. It happens more on larger Japanese Twins than on these Fours, but with modern 'experiments' using things like pod air filters or leaking carbs, it is happening more to these bikes, too.
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

It can happen to Aprilia 1000cc twins when battery is weak using the starter. Rotax engine.

This thing ran real rich for a while. I lived in San Francisco and coming down the big hills this thing sounded like a shootout was going on. I think we found MY specific culprit for this. Thanks everybody!
