Incoming Renovaton Project (400/4)
« on: February 04, 2020, 10:37:45 AM »
Hi All - As above. I thought id register for advice and help. This was owned by my late father (passed away 5 years ago) - he bought it aboiut 35 years ago from a friend who bought it new (and American guy) for when he was in this country (and had something to run around on)  - he never came over that often and eventually said to my dad "meh - you can buy it off me..." so my dad bought it (then, having not passed his test) - he kept it for about 10 years in storage and eventually passed his test. He rode it 1 1/2 times...yes one and a half - he passed his test. Went out on it the week after, went out again (up to the pub) got pissed and had to get collected (and the bike bought home in a friends van). It never got ridden after that. Fast forward to 5 years ago when he passed away. The bike was under a sheet, and left to the 3 of us (me and my 2 brothers) - they wanted to sell it, i bought them out. I got the bike at the time MOT'd with a view to eventually sell. But, we kinda gave it to my 3 kids as an investment for them. So, for the last 5 years its been in a shipping container covered in sheets. One the weekend it came back to my house. Life in the shipping container has been....damp. Very damp. Theres going to be a lot of recoating, re chroming and i would say a ground up rebuild. Personally ive had a life of bikes and currently own 4. Hypermotard 1100 evo sp, RSV4 Factory, KTM525 Supermoto and a 2014 z1000. I maintain all of them to a certain extent (hyper recently had a full engine rebuild which i didnt do but stripped to the frame to get the engine out got that rebuilt and then reassembled). Im more than happy to pull the Honda to pieces...In fact...im looking forward to it.!

Its gonna be a long term project due to the cost....im planning on about a year to do it....im not flush with cash but to get it done right then itll take me a bit longer...

Cheers Gents.

So, its all apart down to the frame...ill type on my laptop but its easier to post pics from the phone through tapatalk....

Not sure what to do with the motor....do i clean and tidy up whats there or, pull the whole lot apart and coat/polish from the ground up (much more expensive...) im ok with surface stuff on engines like clutches, generators but useless/dont trust myself with gearboxes (unless theyre cassette) and top ends....no idea how to set up timing...but, if thats the route that everyone advises then ill strip to the cases....

Evening all. As you can all see I've not been here for a while... A year long landscaping job took priority which is coming to an end now. I still have and engine in its component pieces that nneds to be rebuilt... Does anyone know an engine builder in the UK that can take this on?

You may have better luck posting on the UK site.

http://www.sohc.co.uk/

Are you certain you need a rebuild? How many KM on it?? these motors are nearly bulletproof, if mileage is not excessive, a good carb rebuild will get it running.

It's not so much it needed a rebuild... The bike was kept in a shipping container which literally ate it alive so it had to come apart to have all the cases blasted... The motor has only done 6k but thought while it was apart I'd get the alloy cam chain adjuster...

There is also a 350F/400F facebook group that is based in the UK, someone there might be able to help.
