Just got this young pup in exchange for some computer work...
71 chassis with a 550 engine with unknown miles on it. It's been sitting for a while, but has some nice parts - Dyna ignition with 5 ohm coils, non rusted 4 into 4 pipes and later year tank, clean overall...
Now what?! Throw the engine in the 500 Cafe racer? Part out?

Adopt!  How many times have you passed on a ride because the other person didn't have bike to ride.  This is where you get to say "C'mon over, we'll go for a ride."    It doesn't have to be special or perfect, just a reliable rider to make the white-tanked one jealous and try harder.

Good point. I'm lucky enough to have other bikes to loan so that's covered. Currently I'm considering parting it out partially, as the pipes alone can fund quite a few parts for the running one. The 550 engine might find its way into 500 chassis as well, as I truely HATE the clutch pull on the 500!

Tell me more! I thought it was a bit stiff (and the clutch never really is fully "in"), but maybe I am not alone!!!?!

Not alone... It sucks! Too many flexing parts and that stupid corkscrew actuator. I took the whole mechanism apart and cleaned/greased/adjusted it to no avail. There's an Italian shop that races the 500's, and they built a hydro clutch for the model.

I bought a new aftermarket actuator for my CB500 from David Silver plus fitted a NOS clutch cable and stainless steel pushrod. This resulted in a nice action that was only slightly stiffer than my CB750. I think the key is the actuator as any wear makes them pretty crappy.
