Pics of engine removal please

I've pulled the engine on my 750 3 times now. The first 2 times I manually lifted it out (why I have a bad back?). The third time I saw a thread on here which showed a frame the guy made which, when hooked to a comealong, hoisted the thing enough to get it out> There was also a thread showing how to strap the engine to such a hoist. I welded up the frame and I followed the strapping technique. It worked. I now have to pull the engine again. I have the frame. I can't find the strapping technique and I'm too f#$%^ng old to lift the bastard out myself. So if anyone has hoist pictures. I'd love to see them.

Hi on the 3rd and 4th post of my build thread http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,101767.0.html I have pictures of the hoist fixture I made my own version of one I saw on the  site  the original was plasma or water jet cut and very nice but I just cied the basic shape the first picture shows it strapped to the motor. Good luck and don't get hurt. Oh the white on the lifting jig is stick on sand pa Dr so the straps don't slide around.

For me it was easier to remove the frame from the engine than it was to remove the engine from the frame.

Lay the frame and engine on its side (remove forks and rear wheel), unbolt the frame bolts, then just pull up the frame. Reverse steps for installation.

If bike has frame kit, head and cylibder can.be removed when still in frame making it easier to lift the bottom end wirh a strap and swing it out of the frame.  Reverse order when back in.

I have had thoughts about using a lobg steel bar/profile the engine is strapped to. It rest on a jackstand on one side, the other side a jack pumping it up until engine is free. Bike to be moved sideways since it is parked on dollies. 2 for wheels, 1 for side stand. The equipment do not take much space when not used.

There are also L shaped lifting device of wood or metal with straps. This need a lift or crane. Maybe a car engine lift can do that.

Funny how the earth's gravitational pull gets stronger as time passes!  ;)  I too found that pulling the engine was more than I could handle by myself when I restored my 750 several years ago.  I did what Dimitri13 did.  Laid the bike down on the right side with front forks removed and rear wheel removed (also tank and side covers) and used straps to suspend the frame as I pulled it off the engine.  I put down a lot of padding to protect the engine cases.  When I went to reassemble the bike I used a 2x4 strapped tightly behind the jugs with the cam chain tensioner removed.  2x4 was long enough to allow jack stands to support the engine.  One jack stand on right side of engine, one on left side and one on far left side with frame suspended between the two left jack stands.  Again, forks and rear tire removed.  Both engine removal and replacement are doable by one person this way.I got the 2x4 idea from youtube Hack a week.     Just make sure the 2x4 supporting the engine is parallel grain and no knots so it dosn't snap!

LOL! I feel your pain, I'll be 57 this year and a career in construction takes it toll on the body. I use simple 1" wide nylon straps rated for at least 300lbs. I tie a simple overhand knot in each end to create a loop on each end. I slide each strap over each side of the engine making sure the strap passes inboard of the crank bolts so they don't slide off. Adjust the length of the strap by untying and retying the knot in one of the end loops until you get it where you want it. My strap length puts the lifting fixture pretty much even with the carb inlet spigots. I tie the strap closest to the lift about an inch shorter to cant the engine ever so slightly to get over the engine mount on the lower right side. I can start with a fully assembled bike and have the engine out in about an hour and a half. The hardest part is attaching the legs to the hoist!

I will usually remove the bracket from the back of the crankcase that holds the carb overflow tubes since the clearance is so tight this little bracket often gets in the way and can be easily mangled.  8)

To keep track of the straps I store them with the lifting fixture. EZPZ  ;D

You can pull and mount engines like a pro.  Bikers lines up with their bikes and engines out or in quick and painless ;)

this is my contraption , these are the only pics i have of the frame to install the motor . Once i have it off the hoist  i take the right side  ( facing the bike ) beam off , pass the motor through the frame and reattach the beam & maneuver the motor in place .  Much easier this way than laying the bike on its side ( with wheels off , when i use to do it that way  ) .  Last motor i installed my wife was my helper , not too difficult .

The most expedient way for me was to put the bike on its side and lift the frame. I would have loved to use some kind of rigging because I have a bad back but I couldn't figure out a way to do it in my garage. It comes out from only one side but can't remember whether right or left (I'll take a guess and say left but someone needs to check me  ;D).
You only go around once in life so it might as well be on a motorcycle.

Stripped frame around engine is easy during a complete restore.
Different on a complete bike no need of taking all off for pulling the engine only to fix it.

The lifting devices some have built is a grate help to pull engine without collateral damage on bike or person. Possible without help.

I pulled engine many years ago by laying bike on its side and lift rest of the bike from the engine that sat on its side on the garage floor. I think  I used wooden planks it landed on.

I had to adjust cam.
Same way back. It is easy to add some extra scratches that way.
A soft carpet covering the fllor help.

Just pull the swing arm assy and front end assy to lighten the tank up a bit.

I use the c-hook method with a harbor frieght electric winch bolted to the roof rafters, this gives me 10' of cable between the engine and the winch.  Combined with the fine height adjustment provided by the HF lift table, I can pull the engine  and have it on the stand in 1/2 hour to adjust the valves with the valve cover off, which I prefer to do than struggling with bent feeler gauges through those tiny little holes!
Another 45 minutes to put it back in the bike without scratches and hook up the parts is a good nights work, keeps me out of trouble!

Thanks, TL! I feel better now, knowing that I am not the only one who saves those old bearings that wore out, just to use them on something else... :D

Good tool! A mini version with tripod pipes on each side of the bike, an upper beam holding togerher where the lift is gliding. Balanced C beam included. The entire package will not take much spase when.folded together/ taken apart. It would be fine if it can be used for something else. It must be something like this to buy cheap, ev only the engine balanced beam to make.

I need to make a good lift when.testing my K2 engine build in my stock K2 for road test, initial break-in and dyno. Engine out again and in with the.stock engine that might have got another cylinder with fresh tight bores and +0.5mm K7 pistons .

Old bad ball bearings can be taken apart, one of the races placed on new bearing when tapping it in place. Inner race for shaft, outer for cases, hubs etc.

Back in the seventies when I was in my twenties pulling the engine on a 750 did not present much more of a challenge than, say, changing the rear tire. Now we're in the twenties and I'm in my seventies and when I pulled the engine last fall for a "freshen up" (last time was 1992) I experience serious concern about how I was going to get that sucker back in. Thanks for all the options.

Old bad ball bearings can be taken apart, one of the races placed on new bearing when tapping it in place. Inner race for shaft, outer for cases, hubs etc.

Actually, bearings were good. They're the single-seal originals which I always replace. I keep any bearings I take off that aren't a goner.
