Shortening forks CB550
« on: February 09, 2020, 08:41:32 AM »
I’m going the spacer and cut spring route. Question on the spacer. Would a copper spacer react and corrode in contact with steel or will the fork oil prevent that? I was going to use pvc but the outside diameter will not allow it to slide inside the fork tube.

Why are you shortening the 550 forks?

Copper won’t give any problems. My only concern would be that the side walls of copper tubing is generally pretty thin. So you should probably use washers on top and bottom of the tubing.

Must every pursuit be answered? "Why" is because he does. Does your answer depend upon him meeting your criteria? Either answer the question with technical information, or leave him to his decisions. It's his bike, not a committee-owned asset.

Maybe because what he wants to achieve could possibly also be done by other/simpler or better ways? If one knows what the goal is, one can think better about solutions.

Oh, I'm not trying to discourage the op, just wondering.

Hoping they show what they are doing, always like to see others projects.

'specially since mine sit dormant.

...such as loosening up the triple tree and pushing the top of the forks through.

But I'm also curious as to why.

Or put a spacer on the damper rod to shorten the assembly and reduce travel.

yes Honda man, I may be shorter than some others in the post, 5’6” to be exact. I was not shortening the forks for this reason but more so for appearance. I’m not sure this bike will even be ridden much. It’s more of a trial run and may become glorified garage art. It wasn’t in the best of shape when I found it. So back to the forks. I am not able to move the tubes up in the triple much without coming into contact with the handlebars. I planned to remove about 2” from the main spring and use a 2” spacer on the damper. Pretty common mod from what I’ve read.

The reason I ask: a man was killed on a bike from my shop when Suzuki didn't do the right thing with their swingarms on the early GT750. We had done all we should, but he got killed anyway, from a speed wobble that occurred from that issue (1973 model). Shortening front forks also shortens trail, which induces quicker steering and tendency toward speed wobbles above 45 MPH unless the rest of the chassis is rock-solid.

I've never forgotten that, and rebuild swingarms far better than new, at no profit to me, ever since. Just trying to help save a life here and there...

Just a thought, check the fender to exhaust clearance. My brother lowered his 750 and it hit his header.
