Electrical Questions ???? - Hopefully some answers....
« on: February 07, 2007, 02:42:25 PM »
Any help or pointers appreciated.

Just picked up 1986 gsxr1100 it was missing a generator/alternator, and now has one installed - but not connected yet.

Question - If I turn the motor over to check for spark - plug in end of cap against motor - there is none visible BUT you can feel a slight impulse when holding the plug by hand.

This bike has a Signal Generator, CDI unit ?, and two coils - how do I check these components to see if they are working properly ??

Thanks for your assistance...greatly appreciated....

How are you turning motor?
Electric starter or wrench on end of crank? (or in gear with plugs out?)
You need to check pairs. Don't have one lead lying loose and one grounded, they both have to be able to ground. Get all the plugs out and ground them to cam cover.
It doesnt like less than 10 volts to ignition system, check while cranking as voltage can drop under load.

thanks for the reply

I am turning the motor with a battery hooked up to the + and - leads..
plugs are all out
I will check the pairs as suggested..
have also found a few corroded connections in the circuit so far - will fix those and hopefully get the motor to spin a bit faster..
Coils get power up to them, but will be checking secondaries again..

Would it make a difference if the genrator is not connected to the harness?? This unit also includes the regulator/rectifier.

thanks again
