550F Fork Tubes
« on: October 16, 2020, 01:00:41 pm »
Hello all,

I am slowly restoring my 75 550F (will add pics later) and at some point i am going to need new fork tubes. The Honda part number is 51410-390-003 and I am having 0 luck in finding replacements. Anyone know where to get a set even if its reproductions?

Frank's Forks. Sadly no longer located close to me, but if you won't need them immediately, after they settle into their new location and start taking orders they have a great reputation for making quality products: http://franksforks.com/

I found the 390 550F stanchions difficult to find as they were unique to a couple of years of the 550F. Only needed one and paid about $200 a few years ago for a genuine one. Repros do come up mostly in the far east. Try here but shipping will be $$$.

http://firefoxracing.co.uk/parts-accessories/online-shop/fork-stanchions/honda-fork-stanchions/honda-cb550f-f1f2-fork-stanchion-1975-1980/

But as already mentioned hard chrome treatment will repair most. Other more temporary filling may work for a while and early Fs had gaitors.

Also just noticed Cruzinimage very cheap. Part no correct but note their comment regarding USA models. Are you 100% sure this is the no for your leg?

Hey guys, thanks for the replies! I tracked down each lead and they all lead to dead ends (see below). Beginning to feel defeated on this especially with how much I have spent to get here. Can i use tubes from another model? The ebay listing below matches all the measurements but says they dont fit an F. Thoughts?

I picked up some cruzin image tubes for my 550f (japanese model imported to NZ) they fit fine and worked with my lowers.

Maybe throw up some pics of your your ones and the internals of the lowers (damper etc) and we can compare images and measurements and check whether they would work for you. Like others have said there were/are some variations between specific 550 models.

Be expensive on carriage but a firm here in UK takes your tubes, straightens them then grind and hard chrome to size, never corrode again. Its about £180 GBP  including UK carriage if you are here in UK

Look at the hard chrome option if you can’t find a replacement set. Contact some chrome platers in your area.

I will upload pics tonight, but as far as i can tell the tubes that came with the bike are incorrect. I tried to reassemble and the piston just fell out of the tube and didnt stay in like it should.

This site makes me nervous to order from. I got burned by a similar site that took my order three times and didnt ship any product. The wording and page layout is the exact same so im hesitant to order from them, but thanks!

Are you referring to the ones below? I am not sure what "small insert" he is referencing. I wonder if they would work.

This is the bottom of the 550F fork tube. Seems to be made up on two or three bits in there. Retains the damper tube that goes in from the top. 550Ks had a loose part here and a small rebound spring and different damper.

Not exactly in the neighborhood for you, but these guys built a set for my 1978 CB750K several years ago and did a great job. If you can provide the measurements they can build it. Stock or custom. As I recall the price was competitive.  Best of luck!

That looks to be what mine does not have. That being said, I can say for certain the tubes that came with my bike ARE NOT the ones that should be in it. When I got inside them someone was in there already.
