1975 cb750A exhaust question.
« on: February 20, 2020, 04:58:41 pm »
I just fitted a really clean, 4-1, stock set of chrome pipes on my 1975 cb750F. A local enthusiast has an equally nice, single muffler from a cb750A. In the photos he’s sent me, it looks the same as what I need. Are these mufflers identical? Has anyone interchanged them?

I really can't help you - the only thought is that if they were identical, they'd have the same part numbers, which they do not.   :(

Raymond....... you are probably correct. I picked it up today, because in the pictures he sent it looked identical. The guy was adamant it came from a cb750A, BUT it’s clearly stamped “CB750F XXXXX”. I quickly paid up and headed home! I’ll try and fit it tomorrow and report back........

Now to muddy the waters: the muffler from my '76 750A is clearly stamped "HMCB750F HM393 HONDA". It also has "SANKEI 2017" stamped on it. I know the header is unique to the A model due to oil pan and torque converter clearance, but I'm not sure if the muffler is shared. I could use a muffler in better condition.

Sammon..... The muffler I bought was stamped the same as yours. The seller told me it came from and “A”. Seems like Honda used them on BOTH. It fit perfectly on my ‘75F.

Good to know. I had to pry the three tabs out around the graphite gasket/seal to split it from the header and there are some small rust holes forming on the bottom of the can. I had the rough looking header blasted and ceramic coated already, so I'm committed to using it, and will try to re-use the muffler unless I can find a better replacement.

I just clicked on the photos above to check it out more closely. Where did you find a brand new 1975 Honda? Well done. It makes my engine only restoration and cleaning of everything else look like hot garbage.

Thanks! I bought it a few years ago, from a guy that ran out of steam. He’d started with a bare frame, rebuilt the engine and did a lot of excellent work. Paint on the thank and frame were done by the best shop around here, and is really spectacular. I went all in and built new wheels, new wiring harness, tires, brakes, and electronic ignition. Recovered the seat and recently pulled a stainless Hindle exhaust system off the bike for my Rickman project. I found a really nice set of original head pipes on this forum, then stumbled on the muffler. It really is a gorgeous bike and pretty much “new”......
