CB750 K1 Carb Floats
« on: February 21, 2020, 03:18:23 PM »
My apologies if there is already a thread...  My K1 came with brass floats.  I'm going to replace.  Question is brass vs plastic - either one better?  Should I avoid aftermarket ones?  I can get brass or plastic through JTMARKS.  Just want to run it by you experts before I decide which to order.  Thanks!

If the brass floats are not leaking, why replace them?

Yes, why replace them?
Brass or plastic... no preference. Abused, brass can corrode and leak, plastic does not have that issue. But do you plan on abuse? I've only seen serious corrosion when the bike was left for years with fuel in the tank and petcock on. That concentrates whatever nasty stuff is in that gas that can't evaporate. Presumsbly you wouldn't do that?
I have worked on really old motorcycles... pre 1920... their carbs are primitive but all had brass floats, and some originals were in pristine condition.
Whatever plastic Keihin used for floats, it is impervious to gasoline and ethanol. No ptoblem with them.
Whichever you choose will be fine if OEM. I haven't knowingly encountered aftermarket floats either brsss or plastic Might be great, might be trouble, you call.

If doing a perfect restoration/showbike trailer queen then brass or if doing a reliable everyday rider then plastic/foam and forget about that leaking issue ever arising.
