clutch adjustment question

I have ran through the clutch adjustment procedure half a dozen times and adjusted plenty of clutches on other bikes before, but for some reason the second I put this bike in gear it stalls no matter what, even running the rpm's up.  The furthest I made it was about 30 ft.

I let off the slack on the cable then turned the adjustment screw until it was lightly seated and backed out 1/4 turn.  Then tightened the cable to about 1/4" of free play.  When off the bike shifts through gears perfectly and doesn't lurch forward while running in gear with the clutch in.

This is my first time riding this bike since the rebuild and ever, the clutch is new, the engine sounds good and idles smoothly.

Running out of ideas here, any suggestions?  I know on some other bikes most adjust 1/8 turn instead of 1/4, is that true here?

The bottom end is a '77 750f

Im thinking it's too tight.  I left the adjustment screw 1/4 turn out from seated.  How much free play does everyone have at the lever?  I have slightly more than 1/4" now.  I'll try again in a bit need the bike to cool down a bit.

It sounds like you’ve done everything correctly. Your measuring the 1/4” of slack at the end of the clutch lever? I leave just enough that I am positive the clutch is fully engaged (cable is limp and not doing anything). Any slack you leave means less throw, when you fully pull the lever.........

You said new clutch , did you soak the fiber plates before installing it?

Clutch can stick togerher on a CB750. 2nd gear in, press clutch lever max in, roll bike forwards- backwards a few times and clutch will free.
Some clutch fibers are more prone to stick, same with oils.

The adjuster screw inside clutch cover must have a play, if not slipping clutch.
1/4-1/2 turns out
I have noticed 1/4 out from the first touch when tighten the screw. 1/2 turn out when tighten the screw harder.

Cool, thanks for the replies.  I'll go push it around in 1st.  On my xs650 the manual says 1/4 turn out on the adjustment nut but everyone usually goes with 1/8 turn.  Looks like cb750 is the opposite if its more like 1/2 turn out.

As far as the install, I outsourced this build to a retired honda mechanic so I would assume it was done correctly.  But the engine sat for about 2 years after so maybe things stuck together

Less than the manual will risk clutch slip. But it might be as my CB750s, there is a first weak "stop", continue to tighten a little more to stop. (Continue further will move the clutch.)

Honda might have mentioned the bottom stop, the result will be similar as stop earlier and less retraction.
