Rebuilding steering, will this kit be sufficient? K7 750
« on: February 22, 2020, 04:50:59 pm »
I'm looking to replace and refurb my steering bearings. It's not rough and doesn't feel terrible, Im just getting a new triple and figured I'd better. I'm wondering if this kit will have everything I need to replace seals, etc. I noticed today down by the bottom of the headstem there's a rubber seal poking out partially from the last rebuild, whenever that was.

That kit has all you will need

I used AllBalls kit 22-1011 on 2 bikes already K7 750 and K1 550. kit has all you need. https://www.allballsracing.com/catalog/product/view/id/446. You can find it on ebay or elsewhere cheaper.
Warning - you have to fix higher upper bearing by grinding ridges of upper nut (pos 16) otherwise you won't have enough thread for nut. Additionally you might need to fix small gap between top yoke and headlight brackets (you will be 1-2mm higher) by rubber/steel washer/O-ring or another way.

Described here http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,1516.msg1605853.html#msg1605853

But all in all, installting this tappered bearing is HUGE improvement compare to stock on all bikes I did. And does not require maintenance as legacy one later on.

Would someone be able to tell me the size of these ball bearings inside the steering stem? I'm not sure if I dropped one, or it was short one to begin with, but I'm down 1 ball. Upon checking out the state of these races, I'm just going to stick with the current setup.

I'd like it if I could order it with prime shipping and I knew the size.. but I have a feeling they're not going to be something easy to track down

That is odd! Vin plate on the other side?

Yep! There's a VIN plate. It's been glued on, not riveted. I honestly can't see any grinding marks from it being ground off. No VIN under the plate either

Unfortunately I have 36 total. Know of a way I can get 1 more without ordering a kit off eBay?

Find a bearing with the same ball size and crack it open. I bet someone has balls that were replaced by tapered rollers. I have some at my brother's digs but he is away for a month. I bet someone close to you is in a similar situation as I with old balls to spare.LOL

I think the steering balls are 1/4" in size.

Thanks guys! They look to be pretty close to a quarter inch. Calipers broke or id check lol. Might just bite the bullet and order a pack. I dropped a few when removing the triple as I didn't have a magnet handy and I lost count as they fell so I'm not sure if I'm even searching for one that exists on my garage floor. Might have been short one to begin with on the bottom race

As you can see theres a little room between the top of the fork covers and the top bridge. Is that normal or do I not have my triple far enough inside the stem? Everything tightened down okay inside and the top acorn nut has the perfect amount of threads.

Stick an o-ring in there at the bottom hidden from view if it rattles at the stock fork ear rubbers or you want the gap gone.

I actually just received these fork ears in the mail from another user and since my bike didn't have the stock fork ears originally, I wasn't aware that it needed them. He's actually going to send me a pair, I guess the 77 and 78 models only used rubber grommets at the tops of the fork ears

A  look at the online parts manual is a good way to find out what you are missing rather than making a guess.

upper rubber 2 required

lower rubber 2 required and cost about 3 bucks each

Ah. Sorry I've been at work all day. I searched them on eBay quickly and the listing only said 2 were required. Yeah, I'm wrong about that. Hondapartshouse.com definitely says there are ones for top and bottom

Thanks for the correction!
