SumpThing wet sump conversion
« on: February 17, 2020, 09:04:53 AM »
Hey guys. I saw this neat piece of hardware pop up in a recent forum. Link http://www.outsidersmotorcycles.com/product/sumpthing/?v=7516fd43adaa . I did a deep dive into the forum threads but couldn't find anything definitive regarding whether the SumpThing is a viable alternative to the external oil reservoir. Anyone have any info/experience/2 cents on whether this wet sump conversion kit is a "healthy" mod. I'm going for a café build and don't mind sacrificing some functionality or utility for styling, as long as its not detrimental to engine longevity. I intend on riding the bike(as a commuter, not a track bike) and not just looking at it.

The bike im working on is a 78'cb750f. The SumpThing website states that exhaust clearance shouldn't be an issue, at least for the stock exhaust. I was planning on going with an aftermarket 4into1 tho. The creator has actually chimed in on a couple threads which is pretty cool.

Thank you helpful internet strangers.

Thanks Cal! The info I was looking for was hiding on page 13 "Well guys, a year on and the Sumpthing seems to be working well."

I have a 78 F as well and have been using it for some time; granted I haven't put a ton of miles on it since I always seem to be tweaking something.

Thoughts: it looks great, it doesn't sit down too low (slightly lower than frame rails), never noticed anything unusual, and no issues with pressure (I have a gauge mounted). Can't advise on any temperature issues but like I said, haven't noticed anything unusual.

I did have some clearance issues so I bent the stock pipes down slightly at the header and it fit. I didn't like the exhaust resting on the oil pan though so I went with a 4 into 4 (creating a whole other issue with the kickstand), but I had lowered mine a bit which probably didn't help. You may have better luck with 4 into 1 at stock ride height.

Pic added for reference, although not best angle.

Um gareyc where have you been all my life? I have the exact same mods ready to go on my 750f as soon as my engine get back from hondaman’s shop. Tuffside seat, cognitomoto rearsets, clipons, airbox removal, and pressure gauge. Also gsxr front end.

Also, is that a steering damper?

Great looking bike btw.

Haha I've also got a very similar list of mods. Tuffside seat is great but I added a bit of a lip with ABS so it tightly presses down into the frame instead of having a gap. 2007 GSXR 1000 front forks. Cognito Moto oil tank, front wheel hub and triple tree.

Agree on the seat - for the price and the amount of fabrication / modification it was great. Its not perfect, but considering I didn't have anything more than hand tools at the time it was perfect. You will definitely need something to hold it down unless you get lucky and frame has the exact lines as the seat.

The cognito rearsets were super helpful, again with nothing more than hand tools, but to be honest, they are a little low for my liking. My knees only catch the bottom back corner of the tank now. I'm probably going to ditch them and put together something custom to get my feet exactly where I want them.

Yes, I added a damper. I'm sure I don't need one, but its a peace of mind thing for me.
