Don't let the old man in.
« on: February 02, 2020, 10:14:27 AM »
It was the name of a Travis Tritt song. I heard John Force refer to it recently in an interview, it was told to him by Austin Coil his former crew chief/friend. Then, I read a men's health thread on another forum and found it helpful.
At any rate, I'm going to share some personal info in case it might help someone else. I turned 67 recently and intend to ride as long as possible. My brother gave it up at 80 due to waking up on the ground on occasion. I've gone on the Keto diet, lost almost 50 lbs. since June. At the start I was shedding .4 lbs. a day. Drank 2 low carb beers almost every day and wasn't ever hungry. My Doc. says we can supplement testosterone if I want to. I'm trying some supplements first.
I haven't joined a gym since my old one went out of business, but began lifting at home. Lighter weights but more reps.
I can now wear a leather jacket that my wife bought for me at the local Kawasaki shop around 1975. I was only keeping it in case it fit a son in law or grandson some day. Looks like I may get a chance to wear it out again.
My wife has lost enough weight to get a new hip joint (that fixed her back and she thinks she will be able to take long rides on the bike again).  It would be difficult to do the low carb diet if she wasn't joining in.  At any rate, I'm here to share what I've learned if anyone is curious about low carb diets. It goes against a lot of conventional nutrition thought, not for everyone.

Good on you and your wife Don! We are the same age except I am the older brother in my family. I have found that NOTHING beats physical activity for keeping you young. All my siblings look (and act) like they are years older than me.

As for diet, I have no idea what carbs are. To me they are a devise that fits between the fuel tank and the combustion chamber. 🤪 So maybe I should look into that. I dont have a weight issue at +-195 and 6 ft , but I should take mo-betta care of myself.

Keep up the good work, your kids will love you for it!👍🍻

No sugar, bread, potato's, milk, etc. We are finding more zero net carb foods like bread. Makes it easier. There is even low carb ice cream.

I'm 62 and getting older everyday, congrats on losing weight, it's a good thing. As has been mentioned, think like a shark, keep moving. Keeping active is what keeps me me going, I don't run 60+ mile weeks or ride my bike 200+ miles a week anymore but i keep up and am far more able than most people 1/2 my age. Keep up the good work!

I bumped into an old school chum recently. He was athletic back then but has the old man shuffle now. Point taken. Every time we get a car project during winter I finish it feeling better than when I started it. We've done our Dragster, a jr. Dragster, two Funnycars and now my 69 firebird.

Great results Don! I like the idea of a low carb beer diet. Which one? Man can live on beer alone it seems haha

Michelob Ultra 2.6 grams of carbs per can. My daughter is a buyer for a distributor, they're seeing a steady increase in sales. I find it at Target about the same price as miller light.

I've had very similar results. I started a year ago Feb. I'll post the before and after stats as I made a comparison and snapped a pic. FYI if interested. The biggest convincer was the dramatic lowering of my triglycerides ( trig). For decades it always stayed around 400, now it dropped dramatically. I have not had one episode of acid reflux or indigestion. A morning cough has disappeared........
Initially, this paleo/Keto regimen challenged my chocoholic nature, but it has actually reduced that desire also, I don't miss sugar now......

The most effective diet I found was eating through a straw for six weeks followed by a strictly enforced diet for another seven month's.(ie; I couldn't eat the crap they where trying to feed me)
I left rehab at 83kg, the first time I have weighted under 100kg since I was sixteen years old. ;D

Well done to you and your wife by the way Don, changing the habits of a liftime at 60+ is a big achievement.

That's good to know, my wife's doctor sounded disappointed when she said keto but he then said well, you can't argue with the results. My Doc. was already on it and gave me the suggestion carbs are evil. Then he qualified it a little but we're still learning how it works and a menu we can live with.

Well Done and congrat to you and the better.

Ive been KETOing also. I'm thinking the old F1 performance may benefit from a
30# lighter pay load.  Not enjoying the success you are, only down 11 right now.
Started after the Christmas binges were over.

Don't try Bear's straw diet. Have a friend that was on that diet for 8 week. After having his jaws
wired shut from snowmobile fence clothes line accident.

Yeah, my brother came back from Japan with a wired jaw and cracked head from a dump truck vs motorcycle wreck. He told a similar story, when he flew back they sent  another serviceman along with side cutters in case he got airsick.
Later, when his teeth didn't match they just ground them down.
I recently got re-aquainted with some more old clothes. It will be a while before I ever need to buy blue jeans again. If ever.

My daughter posted a picture of me and my wife, 3 daughters and spouses from a few years ago mentioning we lost a combined hundred pounds. Well, girls never want to admit their weight but my wife did a quick calculation and we lost two hundred pounds between the 8 of us.  That's amazing to me but I'm not fond of that photo.

Now, don’t get me wrong, but a congratulations is due to Don.
However, jggr’s reference to carbs being  “the device between the gas tank and the combustion chamber” about made me fall off my chair! Dang funny!

Thanks and I thought it was funny too. My buddy sells EFI for holley and we use/hear a lot of funny carb references.

Funny the older you get the more you think about your health!
At 72, I looked around and didn't see too many old heavy people, so I thought it might be time to act. Doc said to cut the carbs and just watch what I was eating.
So I went 100% whole grains on bread and pasta and cut out the sweets and did a spreadsheet to make sure I was getting the nutrients etc.
Went from 215 to 190 in a little over a year and labs are good.

Divorce and 12 pack of Coors light a night works too, and much faster, but I don't recommend it!

I love the picking, I watched a few of his videos. Today is the day I've been looking for, I hit the -50lb mark.
I may not however, ever fit the 45 year old leather jacket I was hoping to wear again. A few decades of pulling pipe wrenches and toting heavy tools have changed my chest and shoulders.
