Shinko 712 Tires
« on: February 21, 2020, 10:22:06 am »
Anyone ever used these? A friend gave me a a new pair he bought last Fall, then sold the bike. 100/90 X 19” Front and 110/90 X 18” rear. They look good and some reviews I have found seem positive? They are incredibly inexpensive. Comments?

I bought a set several years ago.  Had many scary "moments" with them.  They last a long time, if your into that.  Personally, I could not wear them out fast enough.  When I thought back, the "moments" always occured in the cold or when I just started riding, so maybe they are just reluctant to warm up and grip like they should.  Just more evidence that you get what you pay for.  Unfortunately, I am willing to pay lots extra to not lose the front or be able to brake for an obstacle.  Never buying them again.

I found some Shinko 712s under my Christmas tree last year. They feel good! I like em.
Its not a Dunlop though.

I've been running them on the 550 for the past couple of years with no problems.  Get around 8000 miles on a rear and twice that on the front.

I have about 5000 miles on a set on my BMW R100. Still decent tread left front and rear. Some cracking in the treads and the rear tire wear pattern looks odd, like it's dished between the treads. No noticeable traction or ride issues, but I also dont ride very aggressively. Would use again for a low-mile around town bike.

I've cranked 'em over hard on my K1 750 no problem, I like them. Never rode them hard in cold weather tho'.

I used them on one of my 550's and was fine with them. I will say that if you live somewhere with good curvy roads and like spirited riding I would choose a more expensive tire. But for day-to-day commuting and touring they 712 works just fine.

Shinko is a Japanese company that purchased all the molds and technology from Yokohama Rubber Co. in 1998 when Yokohama got out of the motorcycle tire game. Shinko manufactures its tires in South Korea. In my estimation, Shinko is a “bang-for-the-buck” manufacturer

The tread pattern is decidedly different than any original tire put on the SOHC Hondas. That being said, I wonder what the differences are in handling/braking/cornering. Would the more modern looking tread create a better handling bike?
How about wet road handling?
Just wondering

Modern tires tend to have a more rounded profile, which I have found helps with turning as the bike can more easily lean over.

I have used 2 inexpensive tires, the 712's and the Kenda K657 Challenders, on my 550's and my GL1000. I used Avon Roadriders on my FJ1200 and Royal Enfield. My current 750F has Metzeler Sportek Klassik's on it.

The 657 and 712's were both good wearing tires, but I never felt completely secure when pushing the pace on the 712's. The 657's seems a bit better in the curves. The RoadRiders were a revelation on the lightweight Enfield 500 compared to the old school style replica tires that came on it. They were overwhelmed by the weight and power of the FJ.

The Metzelers have been amazing on the 750F. I took it on a 1200 mile trip from Chicago to South Carolina last summer that included a ton of curvy forest and mountain roads, including the Dragon, and it was never anything but stable and predictable. They cost 2x what the 712's sell for, but were worth the money.

Danny...... I think you are right. You generally “get what you pay for”. I use the Kendas on almost all my bikes, certainly good value and a decent tire. A few years ago, I put a set of Pirellis on my wife’s cb400F. They were expensive, but really amazing. I once ran them in a sudden rain storm and they seemed even better! I stuck the Shinko’s on the Rickman as it will probably be a while by the time I get it all sorted, tear it down, plate the frame and build it up for the second time. After I fit all the bodywork and get it just right, I’ll treat myself to some better rubber.

Great affordable tire.
Have ran Shinkos on 3 of my bikes so far and loved them.

Good to hear that! I just put a set on the Rickman today. I want the bike running for spring, so I can sort it all and put a few miles on it. Then it comes apart for plating (frame is originally bright nickel) and detailed paint, finishes and final assembly.

I love the Tour masters. 6 sets on four different 750’s. Push the tar out of them. Very impressed in the rain also.
