Where to get a CB500 reproduction fuel tank?
« on: February 28, 2020, 03:01:40 pm »
I see lots of reproduction tanks out there (eBay, 4into1, etc) for old CB750s, but nothing for my CB500. Anyone know where I can pick up a reproduction tank for a '72 CB500?

Never heard of one either, same tank on 500 and 550 up to 77 but not F model.
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

I just don't want to have to buy an original tank, strip out, bondo it, deal with rust, etc. Is there another option for a new tank that let's me just paint it and go?

Tank mount won't match, petcock won't match, tank bolt down mechanism etc...
They make them as generic as possible, but if you have the know-how you'll make it work

there aren't any repop 500 tanks avail, but you are going to spend 500 bucks on one anyway. So the hard work will be cheaper. You could make it worth your while and source 2 good tanks, spend 80 bucks on 5 gallons of clean them both, get them painted different color professionally , new badges, sell one and make some of your money back.

Yeah, this is the conclusion I Was slowly coming to. I just don't have the right setup in my garage to strip and paint without making a huge mess. Guess I'll work on that first. Cheers!

Is the beer used as a stripping agent, or an additive for elbow grease? ;D

It's a body additive to increase the release of dopamine in the reward center that causes the brain into being tricked, making you feel great when doing tasks that are not generally considered fun!
