CB350 wheel bearing seal sizes
« on: March 01, 2020, 08:26:29 am »
I’m working on a CB350G twin, but as the front and rear hubs/bearings/seals are identical to those on the CB350F (same part numbers, etc):

I’m doing the wheel bearings/seals. The bearings themselves are done, but I had a couple of questions on the seals. This is the first time I’ve done this.

I’m using the all balls kit, which comes with four seals. One each for the front and rear wheel, obviously. It appears the third is for the speedo drive, and I’ve no idea what the fourth is for. Here are the sizes of the old/new seals, where all values are what was embossed/stamped/whatever on the seal:

Rear
Old: 30x45x9.5
New: 30x45x10

Front
Old: 22x35x8
New: 22x35x8

Speedo
Old: 34x48x7
New: 35x48x8

Unknown
40x50x6

Questions:

1. Does the .5mm diff on the rear bearing seal matter? Read: is it ok to use or should I try and source one in the original size?

2. Are folks using the supplied speedo drive seal, or attempting to source the original size? If so, where y’all getting them? SKF doesn’t appear to offer a seal in the original dimensions. eBay has some, and I found this: Dichtomatik Americas - 34X48X7TC

Extra credit: I know nothing about bearing seal design, but the SKF catalog shows multiple designs for each set of dimensions. What type of seals are these?

Thanks.

When it comes to seal width, you don't need to worry about .5mm as long as it fits in the pocket and the diameters are the same.  All the seals I've seen on these are single or double lip garter spring grease seals.

Thanks. I’m a total noob at this sort of thing; learning as we go. Any thoughts on the speedo drive seal?

I've never replace it before.  Amazingly, they've always been pliable and not leaked.
