1970 Dick Mann bike
« on: March 06, 2020, 03:42:52 PM »
Stopped by the Honda factory tent at Daytona speedway today.  After seeing this bike and reading the sign, I asked if it was the real deal...she said "yes, that's the real deal"  sign said 1970 cb750 raced by Dick Mann.

It must be... Only Dick Mann could have ridden it upside down to victory. ::)

Fairing is not correct, -exhaust, -shifter...stock forks, cooking the battery  :-* etc. etc...a replica.

with two bolt fork axle caps.... yes, it must be the real thing ;)
gotta love the safety wiring for the fork drain plug and the green / blue cables from the battery,  held with ties on the frame tubes...

Yes,

The standard swingarm and Koni shocks aren’t too obvious too.🙄.  Looks like Diecast CR carbs too.

Nice looking replica, but far from an authentic Honda Works Racing Type.

Yes.  Reportedly thinned from 36mm OD.  Chromed titanium mated to magnesium 4 boo lowers.  Those are factory K0 2 bolt aluminum lowers.  Kit bike type stuff.  Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Honda apparently has no idea that there are people that care or are aware about the correctness of a display. A lot of famous race vehicles morph into the next version multiple times and are eventually lost to us.
I owned an early 60's dragster that went 191mph with a blown gas Chevrolet. (It was written in the paint underneath the latest paint job) I never found the history for sure, The next owner ended up destroying all of the original parts.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

Either that or Italy, as both Akront & Borranni made shouldered rims in period like on the Mann bike.

I'm sorry Kerryb but that is not the Dick Mann bike or one of the other two that raced at Daytona.
It's not even a good replica. Sorry mate.

It looks like the same bike that HONDA displayed at VMD last July...........The honchos said it has 'some' original race parts on it, but fully disclosed it was a replica for show only. I took careful pics of the oil tank.

Dennis, it's not even a close replica.
There are plenty of pics online of the bikes at Daytona to compare it with.

People speak in glowing terms if their replicas, and second or third hand it get more contorted.  So looks pretty much like the original ,soon becomes I thinks it's the original..  the woman you talked to just really does not know , I am thinking.

That is glamping..
Actually I was at a big roadrace, a while back in the US, and several of our members were there. And they had similar accomodations....  and to be honest.. I felt a bit out of place..
But the good part, they had CR replicas, one or two and were flogging the piss out of them..

One thing about race bikes the constantly change, like 2 months after Daytona, the bike may have had different components.  And when not in use, parts get borrowed a lot.l

Frank, I finally googled "glamping"  ;D  That is indeed what it is!

We have a 28 foot Toyhauler we bought used for the 4 of us to have some comfort at race tracks. It would be cheaper to rent motel rooms, but to live the experience of racing and partake of the pits after hours is worth every penny.

To be completely honest though these trailed things we tow around are close to junk. They leak and rot walls & floors in no time. Built of press wood and cardboard, and to effect repairs is time consuming and expensive. Ours is in for repair right now....

Our travelling race club has outgrown some tracks because of all these contraptions, believe it or not.

Honestly in all the 20 years I've been helping a buddy at the Isle of Man, the number of times the bike has gone from one practice session to the next unmodified is zero.

That was my experience, back in the day, too. I probably raced 2 races on the bike(s) without changing SOMETHING that I was not happy with, or found better, lighter, stronger, etc.
