Where can I have a front sprocket made?
« on: March 09, 2020, 04:51:18 PM »
I'm trying to find someone that can/would make me a custom front sprocket. Nothing on the shelf is exactly perfect and anything close either isnt available in the tooth count I want or the chain pitch I want.

I've contacted the following so far:
PBI (said no)
Superior Sprockets (no response to email or phone call)
Sprocket specialties (no, referred me to drag specialties who seems to just carry PBI made sprockets)
Rebel gear (couldnt even get through on the phone)
Cognitomoto (no reply to email, however it's only been 2 days)
Speedmoto (no longer does custom, I'm ordering the closest I can from them to hopefully make something work or modify)
I think Im missing a company or 2.

Posting in this section because of the likelyhood someone in the drag racing world might know. (If this doesn't fit well here, my bad)
I'm close to just teaching myself Autodesk inventor and sending said design and a chunk of steel to anyone with a CNC machine.

I'm fitting a TL1000s swing arm to my cb650.
I'm trying to get an 18 tooth, 520 chain, 11/16" offset sprocket. I've fitted a narrower rear wheel and machined the sprocket carrier already, so I'm try to get a front made to take up the remaining offset necessary. I'm also trying to step down to a 520 chain for rotating mass and the make sure I clear the frame tubes.

a sprocket is not something that can be strictly CNCd as the internal spline is done by broaching , a process that only gear makers have in house. even if you find a sprocket maker to do this, will cost quite a bit

the easiset/cheapest way to make a one-off, offset is to use two sprockets, machine the teeth off one, the core off the other, machine the right offset/step  between the two and weld them together. not rocket science.

Hi Nicklopic,

If you were in the UK I would point you in the direction of Talon Sprockets.  They made some custom 9mm off-set #520 sprockets for my T500 race engine.  I fitted a wider rear tyre and need more width to clear the rubber.  To bring the unit cost down I ordered 5 x 14T and 5 x 15T but it still worked out at £46 GBP each (ouch). However if you need them you just have to take the hit  :D .

yes talon made me some offset tz sprockets a few years ago and they were top quality  . for a one off on the cheap yossefs idea is hard to beat just make sure you weld it so it runs true . you may also have to re heat treat it again but im not sure about that .

Talon were very helpful, if they supply std. CB650 sprockets they will have the appropriate broach for a custom off-set sprocket.  Here's a photo of mine, they also have a recess on the outwards side so the sprocket nut can achieve full engagement (one failed heat treatment that's why only 4 of the 15T).

I'll hit them up and see what happens. Maybe they'll ship across the pond.
The broach for the 650 should be the same as 350s, 500/550s as well as some if not all 750s. They're 6 spline all those use the same sprocket retainer which is splined to match the shaft of course. Should be likely they have the tooling... I hope lol. I'll get in contact with them.
I have ordered a PBI 18 tooth, 5/8 offset 530 sprocket to get me going. I've found suitable donors in their catalog for an 18 tooth 520 sprocket (88-07 ninja 250s incase anyone needs to know)
I'm going to contact my friend and then a shop or 2 and see if they're intresting in creating the bastard sprocket before ordering the ninja one. (I do not have access to a lathe and all I've ever done is mess with some styrofoam in one back in highschool  so I'm forced to rely on someone else lol)

Some sprockets can be split by oarting, and tube added for offset , or as said put 2 together  with a tube..
 How much offset ?
Any 530 can be taken down to 520 , not easy on every lathe depending on hardness, but I can explain how to do it with a grinder.
When making an offset a few steps need following to keep it concentric.

I really appreciate the offer man. My friend's GF goes to school in london and hes visiting in april so that may work out great for me.

I saw that mentioned a few times, and way thinking about that as well. The hardening part makes lathe work difficult and added some complexity. I just dont want to screw it up so i was really trying hard to just purchase something.
Modifying a 530 sprocket down to a 520 sounds easier to me than piecing 2 sprockets together.

Try D&G in Florida. He custom makes offset sprockets for dragbikes.

Sidewinder sprockets might be worth a shot.

https://dgchassis.net/sprockets. Call Dave

I just sent him an email with details. I don't need the answer immediately and I figured it would be easier to see the information and its easier for me to shoot and email between classes/work.
It seems he welds and machines some odd ball stuff so i mentioned either combining 2 sprockets or modifying the 530 one i have.

Haven't heard anything back from talon.
Sidewinder sprockets might be worth a shot.
I can't find any contact information for them. I do see about a thousand horrible experiences with some Ti sprockets from them though.

Hello nicklopic,

I came across some jottings in one of my note books Ref. Talon Sprockets:

1. Tel No. 01935-471508
2.  Names of people I spoke to and arranged manufacture "Kevin" , "Scott Morten", "Dave Hellier"

I seem to recall all three were very helpful.

Cheers  Geoff

Never came across them, seems there's a few options outside the US.
But I have already given D&G a deposit, and they're in the US on the same side of the country so it works well
