Cb400f oil pan gasket?
« on: March 14, 2020, 12:52:14 PM »
I'm chasing an oil leak (aren't we all...) from my bottom end. I took the oil pan off two years ago when I bought my motor but I reused the gasket. I want to change it and am wondering if the cheapest ebay gasket will do.

Will it work? Probably, but for how long?
Whats the difference in price between the "cheap" gasket and a quality gasket? A few dollars? What is your time worth?
Use Honda Bond lightly when you install the gasket on clean metal surfaces.

One thing about the cheap gaskets are they are usually thinner and can cause you to overtighten the bolts and you risk stripping out the threads.

How can you tell which is a quality gasket and which isn't?

Honda doesn't make that part anymore. Is it better to get an NOS honda gasket? I was looking at this USA made item.

Does it have a brand name?
I like Vesrah and OEM.
I do not know anything about the one in the picture other than it's the wrong color.

Make sure for certain it is the sump gasket that is leaking. If any of the engine seals above that level are leaking, the oil tends to track down and along the line of the sump / bottom case join. Don't use Honda Bond on any gaskets just a very light smear of grease on the gasket or leave dry. Honda Bond or similar is for machined surfaces where no gasket is fitted.
Trust me I'm a Nurse, I promise it won't hurt....much

I replaced a 350F pan with a stripped drain bolt, and was leaking oil. Thought it was the new gasket, but removed the cover and tracked it down to the oil pressure switch. It leaked out of the bottom of the cover and right onto the pan, which is why I thought it was the pan. Worth verifying to save a headache.

I really think it could be the pan gasket that's leaking. I changed the orings in my oil pump and that seems to have cured a much more serious leak (although it was still minor).

Now, after sitting for a month or so, everything above the pan seems dry, but the rear pan bolt above the drain plug is quite wet and the drain itself is a little oily. I thought it could be chain lube, but the bike hasn't even been started in months, let alone ridden.

It's easy enough and inexpensive enough to change the gasket for a new one that I'm going to do it.
