In 52 a new four cost $1288 +shipping.
These were expensive toys, you had to have money and really want one.
Never saw one on the road.
Ten years ago there was a project bike on ebay.
Knew nothing about them, bought books, found the outfit in the uk that has parts new and used to keep these prototypes running.

I rode one hot summer night (1972) with a guy who had one of the old Indian Fours, but much-stripped, sort of 'chopped' but with normal front end forks (just skinny fenders). Along about 11PM I was riding next to him and noticed the rear 2 cylinders were actually glowing a little bit, and you could see a shadow of the last piston moving up/down as we rode! Later I asked him about "length of ring life" and some other pointed questions: he said it was mostly that he worked on it half the winter, every year, to be able to ride it 2 months in the summer. He'd put new rings in it several times. He had owned it for more than a decade then. He mentioned that he had hopes that the new, slimmer front fender would help cool it better. That made me wonder what the engine looked like at night with all the fancy Indian stuff on it?

 Glad it is looking good inside and coming apart easily enough...how difficult will it be to reseat that gear on reassembly?

Gears are pressed on crankshaft and needs puller.
I ordered the puller and some parts from the prototype parts company.

I'll bet those carbs are going to be hard to sync enough to stop THAT gear rattle(!).

If memory serves me here [it's been about 60 years since I worked on my Mark II Ariel Square Four] they have only one carburetor [a big SU..like on a lot of British cars and bikes of the time]..so 'synching' is not an issue per se.

The gears on the crankshafts have timing marks on them..the same as timing marks on cranks and cams do on single crank engines.
Overall..I didn't find the Square Fours to be much more difficult to work on than most multi cylinder bikes..either then or now.

As 69CB said though..everything is pressed on pretty tight.  So I found it necessary to use gear pullers on a lot of the parts..to get things
disassembled.

They are fun to work on I feel.  Sound great when running..kinda like a Offenhauser four racing engine..that was also very popular in race cars..Indy..scrambles..et al..in the 60's

I'd enjoy seeing/hearing a video of it running.when 69Cb gets it back together..

Yes, one carb, solex in 52, su came later.

The bike sat disassembled in a Nebraska barn for 62 years.
A lot of work and time to bring it back to life.
I want to go for a ride, it will take some time.

The kitchen is useful. I removed the liners from a cylinder  when my wife was away for a week or two.
It smelled horrible for several days.
I have heard others that clean parts in the dishwasher when home alone.... ;D

There is a crack in one of the liners, has pushed part of the liner out of the cylinder, never seen this before.
