Aftermarket shocks ect
« on: March 06, 2020, 03:42:15 AM »
Gents

I have an imported 1975 US 400/4. Shockers look somewhat careworn, so I am thinking of replacements. Do I go for originals or is there anything out there which gives an improvement - prefereably something which looks close to originals.

Addtionally - Would like a nice chrome horn to set things off. Seems to be millions of them out there, so any recommendations for something of a decent quality would be most appreciated.

Ikons, not cheap but the best

Ouch - those Ikons are certainly not cheap! Hagons any good? It's not as if I will be entering the TT!

Hagons are good quality as well but are not much cheaper than the Ikons. There are very cheap sets being offered by many on line parts sellers but I would not use them.

What about the ones from a seller like 4 into 1? They tend to not sell total garbage

I buy quite a bit from 4into1 but I would not use those shocks. I know, they are tempting at $70 bucks and look nice and everything but handling and stability are important. I have Hagon shocks on two bikes and Ikons on a third. The Ikons cost me $270 for my last build but in the total scheme of things thats not too bad.

After a little searching, I note Ikon do a "Basix" model. I assume for a 400/4, but will confirm. These appear to be considerably cheaper than their other offerrings. Anyone have any opinion on these please?

I used the 76-4002 Ikons on my cb550 listed now at $280. Also fit the 400F.

I went through this when I got my 400, just get the Ikons. You can get new reproductions from 4into1 if you want. But if you want them to actually have a nice ride you have to go nicer.

On my 350 I have a set of vintage marzocchi racing shocks that I got on a parts bike. same size as the 400. You could pick up a set of those on ebay.

You do get what you pay for to a point. It all depends on how much adjustment you want from a shock. I have Race Tech on my race bike and the quality and performance is outstanding.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

As you are in the UK your best best is to buy a set from TEC Bike parts in UK if you want as close to original (but vastly better😊) . I have these fitted to 9 assorted CB SOHC/4's, including a 400/4 and they are fantastic for the price. Many of us on the UK site, Honda SOHC.co.uk have fitted them with no complaints at all.

Yes, saw TECs on Fleabay. I guess it depends on how you ride. Personally I don't ride like a lunatic, but then again, I do like a nice handling bike. Plenty of twisties where I live. I fully appreciate that you pays your money you takes your choice, but 350 odd notes is still steep for Ikons. May take a look on Fleabay for second hand stuff Any ideas of other half decent makes that could be compatible? Thanks for the steer to the UK site by the way...

Just as an experiment I bought the repro ones off of 4into1. They actually don't seem as horrible as I thought they'd be. They weigh about as much as my original ones. Maybe a gram or two less cause they're 320mm. Chrome looks to be okay. I'll update on how they actually perform at some point if I think about it
